Patrick Roy will not be the coach of the Avalanche. Not for next season, anyway. Roy informed The late Thursday night he would like to remain in Quebec at least through this coming season, mainly to keep coaching his sons, Jonathan and Frederick.

Like recently removed Avalanche coach Joel Quenneville, Detroit's Mike Babcock has a contract that expires after this season. However, Babcock has little or no reason to consider that a problem.

Citing a difference in hockey philosophy, Avalanche GM Francois Giguere outlined the reasons why his team and coach Joel Quenneville are parting company. Quenneville, who posted a 131-92-23 record in 3 seasons, was let go in what the team termed a mutual parting.

Could this be Joe Sakic's last postseason before retirement? Could this playoff run, however long it lasts, be the last Avalanche fans see of him in a Colorado uniform before he stands at a podium, likely wipes away a tear or two, and mentioned that it was fun whilst it lasted? The Avalanche captain will be 39 in July.

In his 1st 3 seasons coaching the Avalanche, Joel Quenneville got the team to the playoffs twice and missed a 3rd by one point. Is that enough to warrant a contract extension? GM Francois Giguere was noncommittal when asked, saying Quenne-ville, like any team employee, would get a full evaluation when the season is done.

Former Avalanche goalie Patrick Roy, coach of a Major Junior Hockey League team, was suspended today in the aftermath of a messy rink-wide brawl involving his son during a game Saturday. Roy was suspended 5 games for allegedly sending his son, Jonathan, also a goalie, to fight the opposing team's goalie.

When the Avalanche return to practice Thursday morning, they probably will be joined by their expensive left winger, Ryan Smyth. Smyth, the team mentioned Tuesday, is probably going to return after making a speedy recovery from the scary hit he had taken March 1st in a game against L.A.
