No incentive for avs to do this #1. And secondly most NHL contracts are insured for around 80% if the player has a career ending injury. Nathan Hortons was less than 20% insured because of his injury history, and he is owed 14.1 mill actual cash over the next 3 years. which means the team is paying him 11.5 mill out of there own pocket to have him not play. Not many owners are okay with doing this, the leafs are. Don't think the avs are, Unless you're giving them a top prospect to go with it. Dave bollands Contract was insured at 80% and it still cost the panthers Lawson Crouse to ditch it.

Leafs don't need to get rid of the contract, they are the wealthiest organization and the option to use this for LTIR is a nice loophole.
