Winnipeg will need to shed some salary this offseason and the next.

Two players with significant salaries I can see as expendables:

Tyler Myers - 1 more year, 5,5M
Mathieu Perreault - 3 more years, 4,125

Trade 1

Myers is the best of these three and had a very good season but the Jets can't afford him in the future so trading him while his value is high is a reasonable move.

To TOR:
Tyler Myers

To WPG:
1st 2018
Connor Carick (RFA)
Calvin Pickard (RFA)

Toronto gets their so needed RHD to play with Rielly. Winnipeg gets back a selection in the first round of this year's draft, young 6/7 D to challenge Poolman and Niku, and a talented goalie to fight with Comrie for the backup position.

Trade 2

To MTL:
Mathieu Perreault

To WPG:
Paul Byron

Montreal could use any offensive help. Perreault is a versitile skilled forward who can play both C or wing and - of course - he's from Quebec. Byron would help Winnipeg's bottom six and is cheap.

There is a third player who could be moved - Steve Mason - but I can't see any takers without retention of salary at this point. He's had a rough year but I believe he turns things around in his contract year. Since it's just a year left of his contract, he stays next season and then is gone to free agency with Comrie taking the backup role.

Sorry for including Pickard in the Myers' deal. I initially thought of Mason (retained salary) going to Dallas but I gave up that idea beacuse the countervalue wouldn't be enough to make it work IMO. So exclude Pickard in the first trade. It could still be an interesting deal.

I don't think that's enough for Myers myself and get ready for Montreal fans in here to say Byron worth a heck of a lot more than that. They think he's the fastest in the league, a superstar. You're going to get laughed at. Watch.

I'm always prepared for that. :)

Umm I rather say that Perreault is 100% better than Byron
@yup.

Myers deal isn’t bad I’d do it from the Leafs POV unless someone falls drastically to 23rd ovr.

I am shocked. 😱

Perreault - Tavares - Drouin could be alright in Montreal next season.

@kov

if you're okay w the Toronto deal, i am too. I would think toronto would need to add a prospect tho, and then WPG add like a 5th or sumtin.

I’ll do that all day long from leafs perspective.

Perrault is way better than Byron and WPG is trying to win now, how does getting a first for one of their top 4 D help?

Winnipeg is not going to move players like Myers when they are in cup contention. The window of opportunity is usually quite small and Myers is a big part of that defense.
