Cap wise it works for the Sabres & they gain much needed depth. A vet C to help on D & the PK. LW scoring in Sven. Affordable RHD to play up & down the pairings.

Canucks free up the roster logjam & gain cap space immediately & for 2020. Risto won't be needed to be overplayed & better off for it helping out scoring. Sobotka is serviceable for his last year on the bottom 6. Allows flexibility to trade Tanev or let him walk as a UFA.

Tbh i'm not sure i want this trade thinking the Sabres get a pretty good return. Long term & cap space is my motive.

Easy no from Buffalo.
They get no value back for Ristolainen.
Sutter is a overpaid 3rd line centre, Baertschi is extremely injury prone and when he's healthy he's always inconsistent. Stecher is a bottom pairing defenceman.

Also, salary cap wise this doesn't work for Buffalo.
They currently have -1M in cap space.
5.4 (Risto) + 3.5 (Sobotka) - 1 (Negative cap space) = 7.9M
4.3 (Sutter) + 3.3 (Baertschi) + 2.3 (Stetcher) = 9.9M

9.9 > 7.9
Because of this trade not only do the Sabres get worse but they gain an extra million in cap space debt.

2 demotions to the AHL gets them compliant.

Risto is the best player in the trade.
Sobotka is a cap thrown in.
Sutter is a 3C and overpaid for only 2 more years but helps where the Sabres lack most. C depth and D.
Sven is injury prone but isn’t a lost cause albeit some risk comes with him but can help out scoring.
Stecher truly a 3rd pairing D yes but is useful still.

Overall it’s a hopeful trade on the Canucks side.
Risto is good for scoring and needs to be in a better position and not relied on to play too many shutdowns minutes.
Depth and experience is the selling point if Botterill sees it that way. If a better offer out there then take it. His ask i assume is too high and Risto being RHD is his biggest carrot.

Sabres don't need any RHanded Shooting Defencemen or LWingers.
Sutter would be the only interest.

Sitter is injury prone. Baertschi is injury prone. Stretcher isn’t really any good. Buffalo can do better than this or won’t bother.

Uhm, how do the Sabres lack depth on defence?
Also, I'm a bit confused on where this LW depth issue is.
They signed Johansson to be their 2nd line LW and Jeff Skinner is their first.
After that they have Vesey and Girgensons as the 3rd and 4th line LW.

And the centre depth issue is definitely arguable.
Where is Sutter going to play? 2nd line? Nope. Mittelstadt. 3rd line? Nope. Rodrigues. 4th line? Nope. Larsson.

All of Buffalo's centres are cheaper and better than Sutter. (Larsson is arguable)
