I remember it well. it was the first time we had seen Mike Tyson live. we were absolutely stunned that he lost.

{Ed001's Note - so it could just be that you are a jinx then Habby??}

Lol. it certainly felt like it at the time. I also remember when Holyfield easily beat buster. how quickly we all agreed that Holyfield was 10x better then Tyson lol. Back then you only knew what you saw on tv. there was no internet to pop on and find out why or what might have been going on outside the ring. We just assumed the buster that fought Tyson was the same buster that fought Holyfield. it wasn’t till much later we realized he wasn’t, we thought the extra weight he put on was all muscle lol that era of heavyweights was pretty solid. not as good as the division in the 70s but still good. I wonder how Tyson would have fared against riddick Bowe.

{Ed001's Note - it is a shame we never got to find out, though Bowe would probably have ducked him like he did Lewis. Let's face it, a peak Tyson was scarier than Lennox Lewis, no matter how one-dimensional he was, the man was frightening.}

He was. but bowe was scared of Lewis cause Lewis was bigger and could out box him. he may not have been as scared of Tyson as he was much bigger then Mike. I was always torn on how good Tyson actually was. I wouldn’t say he fought all bums but a lot, especially in the Cus years we’re hand picked and up to the buster Douglas fight he had really only fought a handful of decent fighters, I mean tony tucker and bonecrusher smith had both gave him a lot of trouble. both decent fighters but they weren’t close to Holyfield Lewis or bowe imo tyson wouldn’t have dominated the 70s or the 90s but he did dominate the 80s.

{Ed001's Note - the problem was the top fighters were not really there in his time, not until too late for him. The likes of Spinks were probably not really at the same level as Holyfield and Lewis, I wouldn't include Bowe as he was nowhere near either of them or Spinks, Smith, Holmes or Tucker. But Holyfield and Lewis had pretty much the same problem, as they only had each other to fight. It is a shame but boxing was in decline, a decline it has never recovered from and I doubt it ever will now with MMA pushing it aside.}

Bowe beat Holyfield 2 out of 3 times when they were both in their prime to say he wasn’t close to Holyfield is an argument you would have trouble winning. Holyfield had way more heart but matched against each other there was a slight edge for Bowe. Michael spinks was a better light heavyweight then heavyweight and was so scared before the Tyson fight he had it lost before he entered the ring. Larry Holmes in his prime probably beats them all when he fought Tyson he was way past that though. the guy had probably the best jab in boxing history it would have given anyone trouble including Tyson. if Bowe had fought Tyson and had fought him the same way he fought Holyfield he might beat him too imo. but knowing Bowe he probably would have been afraid of Tyson too like he was with Lennox and refuse to fight him as well lol.

{Ed001's Note - that's the problem with Bowe, he had no bottle, whereas Holyfield wanted to fight everyone. So I know Bowe beat him, but when you look overall at who was the best, you wouldn't even mention Bowe, but Holyfield often gets talked about. The same as Spinks though for me, Holyfield was better at light-heavy.

Can't argue on Holmes, he was top class in his prime, would have been good to see him take on Tyson then.}

I’d still rather watch an amateur boxing fight then a championship mma fight. always have and always will.

{Ed001's Note - I like both personally.}

I remember that fight, and like all, was shocked to hear Mike Tyson lost. I had never even heard of Buster Douglas at the time. at the time Mike Tyson ( if I remember right) was the biggest name in sports at the time.
For me there are 2 Mike Tysons, the before Robin Givens, and the after.
The before would have won against anyone, any era at anytime. Unfortunately, Tysons peak was at a time where there wasn't a great group of fighters to go against. When he lost to Holyfield, Lewis, he was no longer the same guy he was when he was in early 20's .
His best competition in his top moments I believe was Razor Ruddick.

{Ed001's Note - Ruddock had his jaw broken in their first fight, never seemed the same afterwards sadly.}

Let’s just say prime Ali doesn’t beat him which I think he does. but do you think Tyson beats prime George foreman? he was just as intimidating as Mike before Ali brought him back down to earth. hell foreman was beating good fighters and still giving great fighters like Holyfield trouble when he was almost 50. Tyson eventhough we didn’t know it at the time was weak mentally for a professional boxer. can't really fault him for that after what he went through as a kid. but really good competition would have brought it out of him sooner. he will be the first to tell you he wouldn’t have beaten Ali. ALi was willing to die in the ring Tyson never was.7 or 8 rounds of 1960s Ali dancin and stickin Tyson quits on his chair like Liston did. and 70s Ali would have beat him just like he did with foreman.

{Ed001's Note - I think Foreman beats him. They were both wrecking balls but Foreman was bigger and tougher.}

Thank you Habby. It is scary how much the world turned a blind eye to for the sake of money.
