I wanted to do a list of best players ever played against/with or watched before they were in the NHL. These rankings have nothing to do with how good these players actually are, just my opinion. I thought it'd be interesting to see if anyone else played against some NHLers.

1. Ty Smith - He scored 4 goals against my team as a Dman in spring hockey. They guy was impossible to stop

2. Bowen Byram - I played minor hockey for years against him and he was just so much better than everyone else it was insane

3. Jasper Wetherby - played against him when he was with Wenatchee. He laid me out

4. Massimo Rizzo - Played against him. He scored. He was so shifty

5. Kale Howarth - played with him. So strong and such a good skater

6. Jake Lucchini - Just signed in the AHL. He's just so solid in everything

7. Connor Jones - played against him for like five years at hockey school. Probably the most intense guy I've met

8. Seth Barton - played with him a year ago. He's still a long ways away from the NHL but has tons of raw talent

9. Luka Burzan - he went undrafted last year but I expect him to go this year. Hat trick against my team in spring hockey

10. Travis St. Denis - amazing shot. Could see him getting a shot in the NHL pretty soon

Where ya from? I'm a Cranbrook boy. I'm a lot older than you if you played against Byram. I use to play with Rob Neidermayer.

2.) 12 Apr 2019 11:14:16
Hahaha Sosa i’m in the same boat. maybe I played hockey with some of those kids’ grandparents.

3.) 12 Apr 2019 11:24:10
You a Kootenay boy as well Unsportsmanlike?

4.) 12 Apr 2019 11:37:52
West Kootenays. Byram was unreal. It’s funny seeing a guy go from AA hockey to potential top 5 pick.

5.) 12 Apr 2019 14:37:06
I skated circles around Michael Ryder for years. He kept playing while I leaned more toward sex drugs and rock and roll. Now he is a millionaire and I'm posting on here.

6.) 12 Apr 2019 15:00:55
no I didn't mean same as from the region. i meant same as in old AF haha.

7.) 13 Apr 2019 00:28:28
I’ve played with Anderson MacDonald, Lynden Breen, Josh Lawrence, Jaxon Bellamy, Peter Reynolds, Lukas Cormier And Cam Whynot. Practiced with Joe Veleno and Shane Bowers. Played against Alex Lafreniere, Alex Newhook, Brett Budgel, Dawson Mercer And Jacob Pelletier.

8.) 13 Apr 2019 02:30:52
It’s pretty cool to see guys you’ve played against or with make it to the show. I got 3 shifts when we played Victoria so I got a great view of him the whole night.

9.) 13 Apr 2019 23:23:49
Played a pick up game with Aaron Brand, we’re I live we used to have a huge county wide roller hockey tourney called “the coupe classic” coupe being the name of our roller hockey court. Anyways Rick Nash played in this tournament one year. or at least a game. That was pretty cool as that was before he was drafted and I think he would have been playing for the knights in his rookie year.

10.) 16 Apr 2019 05:18:36
i played in bantam and midget tournaments in the late 90's, some of the names in the program include

carlo colaiacovo - mississauga reps

derek roy - eastern ontario cobras

cody Mccormick - Elgin Middlesex chiefs

daniel paille - welland tigers

kevin klein - kitchener Jr rangers

matt moulsen - mississauga braves

matt stajan, chris campoli, Matt foy - mississauga senators

lee stempniak, Mike cammalleri, Jay mcclement and Steve eminger.

What are your opinions on suspensions for drug use? Schmidt's seems very fair but to me the more pressing problem would be the cocaine abuse throughout the league. I have heard from a person in the NHL himself (played 3 games) and have read about it a lot. There is no current suspension for coke but should there be?

Nitehawk

1.) 03 Sep 2018 14:37:48
It's hard to know yet if the Schmidt suspension is fair or not. if there was as little they say in his system I'm not sure he should have been suspended at all. Unless they can verify he was using during last year and at some point there was a lot more in his system. if that's the case and they can prove without a doubt he was cheating he should be kicked out of the league as far as I'm concerned. the cocaine thing is tricky it only stays in your system for a couple days and players can plan around it for the most part. but it's not going to improve there game or give them an unfair advantage. but players do get caught sometimes and are forced to go through a counselling program.

2.) 03 Sep 2018 14:41:51
It's there own business and it isn't a performance enhancing drug.

3.) 03 Sep 2018 15:05:21
I say let them do what ever they want to do off the ice just as long as It doesn't hurt their game. .

4.) 03 Sep 2018 17:59:43
I know it isn’t a performance enhancing drug but it doesn’t set a great example. I do see where you guys are coming from though.

5.) 04 Sep 2018 15:49:45
The drugs that are banned are on a list that every player should be familiar with. This isn’t a hobby, it’s their livelihood. So they should take it very seriously and be extremely cautious. If it was such a small amount and he really honestly was unaware, I feel bad for him, but rules are rules. Rememebr Sweden losing Nik Backstrom for a semi final game for a similar infraction? Nik backstrom doesn’t seem like the guy who needs to cheat to be good either, and no drug is going to improve his game as its all smarts and Vision. But the rule is the rule.

Now, where I have a problem with the suspension is in contrast to other rules. As a first time offender and what could very possibly be a mistake, Schmidt gets 20 games. As where after 10 years and 20 attempts to decapitate players and end guys career, someone like raffi Torres finally worked his way up to a 20 or 25 game suspension. And guys like matt Cooke never saw more than a 5 or 6 gamer I believe.

If they want to be very hard on drugs and send strong messeges to maintain the integrity of the league and the sport in general, I’m fine with it. But then get a lot touger on these headhunting morons taking runs at stars. Because a lot more people pay to see star players skill than a plug taking runs at guys.

6.) 04 Sep 2018 23:39:44
That's true jim but overall I think there has been a moderate improvement in the last 2 years. With regards to cheap shots. Could have something to do with the dirty players who were causing them are not playing anymore lol like the guys you mentioned. My feelings on the steroid issue is I hate that even more. just think if it did come out that several Vegas players were taking peds last playoff. It could be argued they cheated 3 or more cities out of millions of dollars not to mention the players coaches management and owners of all those teams. i hate head shots and dirty play too. But if there is even a thought that peds are being used in this sport then every action should be taken to catch them and when they do they should receive a lifetime ban. nothing would hurt the integrity of the game more then a team cheating to win a stanley cup.

7.) 05 Sep 2018 03:35:09
That’s true. I never think of PEDs in hockey, just hasn't been that kind of issue before. But in baseball you could pick out guys hitting 40+ homeruns that hadn’t cracked 20 before and when they failed a test, it almost became expected. But now hearing this and thinking back, it’s funny that all through those playoffs the commentators were commenting on how Schmidt never gets tired and could play 2 minute shifts at full speed. That could be just his conditioning that he has truly worked hard at and if I never heard this news I would never assume he was cheating. But looking back I’m thinking to myself “maybe this guy isn’t a freak of nature” lol I don’t actually believe the minuscule amount in his system created his success, more a joke, but his conditioning was almost super human.

8.) 05 Sep 2018 04:32:48
What I keep thinking jim is maybe there was a lot more in his system during the playoffs I can't say that I believe it was but what if?

9.) 05 Sep 2018 04:57:09
I honestly say let them take steroids it’d improve the game, creating a quicker pace could be funner to watch.

10.) 05 Sep 2018 10:29:50
Yeah, it’s possible. I know guys a lot more into the scientific side of supplements and fitness than I am, and they all say that your typical PEDs aren’t really going to give a player the advantages in hockey that they do in other sports. It’s such a fast and reactionary sport rather than stoic and repetitive. For instance, in football, if a lineman takes steroids and packs on crazy amounts of muscle, he is face to face with another player from a stand still and he is supposed to block him out. That’s an immediate on field advantage.

Or like I used before, a batter facing a pitcher and the added muscle greatly increases the chance of the ball going further (swing mechanics obviously as important) . But in hockey, if you’re bigger and stronger but the slightest bit less mobile or agile because of it, in today’s game, it’s almost a disadvantage. Only Way that PEDs help hockey players really is allowing muscle to repair quicker for more frequent off ice training, which is still cheating but somehow Less egregiously. Again, I’m not a scientist or a doctor, but that’s my summary of what I’ve heard from people a lot more informed on it than me, an average fan. (Dumbing it down, they used a lot of big words lol)

11.) 05 Sep 2018 14:46:17
It creates a huge advantage in your off ice training. Like what you said earlier about Schmidt not getting tired. That's the advantage it can give the most. on top of that it can be huge to older players with more wear and tear on their bodies it can make it much easier to train quicker after injuries and get back to 100%. And eventually they would have to make bigger helmets for the increasing head sizes lol.

12.) 05 Sep 2018 20:44:37
But they would use the extra plast from decreasing jock cup sizes to expand the helmets. It’s actually a break even venture for Bauer and Easton.

13.) 05 Sep 2018 21:37:00
Steroids don’t actually shrink your genitalia they actually just lower you testosterone levels temporarily.

14.) 06 Sep 2018 00:44:36
You can’t make steroids legal because that a huge advantage to players willing to put them in their bodies. Some guys won’t want that stuff in their bodies and guys who are 4th line guys would possibly be out of jobs, forcing them to do potential harm to themselves to play in the league.

15.) 06 Sep 2018 04:16:54
Stop raising the bar on the level of stupidity vbb’s. Let players do whatever they want and encourage steroids because it would be “funner” to watch. These professionals are role models to young kids around the world. They are making millions playing a game they love. They should be held accountable for performance enhancing drugs. I’m not saying these kids can’t have fun but PED’s are and should be illegal. Like Nitehawk said, some guys don’t want to put stuff in their bodies and shouldn’t be expected to just to compete.

16.) 06 Sep 2018 04:51:09
We'll said boys. Not you vbb.

17.) 06 Sep 2018 17:48:33
Vbb, yes they do lol read a credible source, like a medical journal, not what some gym person claims on a Facebook page. Steroids don’t decrease testosterone as you say. They increase it. The body actually notices this and reacts by shutting down natural production of testosterone. This causes smaller and less potent testicles and can actually return them to an almost pre-pubescent state if you take them long enough.

18.) 06 Sep 2018 21:04:36
Vbb sounds like a guy who takes steroids I'm picturing him with a gigantic head and pre- pubescent sized testicles lol.

19.) 08 Sep 2018 00:19:58
Massive upper body, veiny neck and twig legs that can barely hold it up lol.

20.) 08 Sep 2018 04:49:22
Hahahaha!
