Offseason gameplan for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Let go: Martin, Ehrhoff, Downie, Winnik, and Adams, Greiss

Buyout: Scuderi- The only reason its a good idea is because the Pens have entry level contract defensemen NHL ready.

UFA: Lapierre, Comeau, Chorney

RFA: Bennett, Cole, Doumoulin, Megna, Payerl, D'Agostino, Uher.

Listen to offers for: Kunitz, Lovejoy, Perron, and Spaling.

The Pens biggest needs this offseason is to get younger, and start acquiring picks to rebuild the future. We have some (not many) younger offensive prospects and they need to be in the mix.

MAF is this teams goalie but his backup is a problem. Murray and Jarry are young promising goaltenders and another full season in the AHL would benefit to there growth, So they should sign another vetern back up goalie to gap fill until one of them is NHL ready.

Its time to find a winger for Malkin, he played well with Neal on his wing. Neal is a pure sniper. Maybe Hornqvist is the winger Malkin needs to work with in the offseason to build chemisty.

Defense will be young and faster. Sucks we traded away a physical defenseman in Depres for Lovejoy. Letang and Maatta are good enough to anchor down the blueline. Dumoulin, Harrington, Cole, Pouliot, and Ruopp/Chorney are more than ready to contribute full time on the NHL roster.

Going younger will help the Pens in salary cap issues. There is not excuse to have played only 5 defensemen the last 3 weeks of the season.

One last area that needs address that's not a rumor but a greater need is a better strength and conditioning trainer. I understand concussions played a big reason they had so many players on IR, but when the team consistenly leads the league in Man games lost something needs to be done.

I know this was a lot to read and no trade rumors as to so and so traded to so and so, but its more of a discussion. Because the Pens are in a tough position.

As a Pens fan, The Pens need to make a couple moves at the deadline.

Trade #1: It's time for Martin to go before we lose him for nothing this offseason. I wouldn't mind seeing Martin for Williams from LA Kings.

Trade #2: Sutter is just not playing to his potential here and needs a team to center the second line for. I can't think of any teams in need of a second line center. Unless packaged

Trade #3: Beau Bennett can fetch a decent return due to his potential.

Trade #4: I think I'm the only one that feels more comfortable having Zatkoff as back up over Greiss. Besides, Murray needs more professional minor league experiance playing everyday. No one is really in the market for a so-so back up goalie. Unless packaged

Tought #1. Harrington or Doumoulin should probably get added to a package deal.

Moves #1-2: Its time to end the Downie experiment. Unless some how the coaches can give through to him to stop taking penalities. We have two solid lines (5 on 5) but can't play them when we are contantly killing off penalities. Finally, its also time to see Adams hang up the skates. He should not be taking shift on the top 2 lines ever in a game.

So, Pens trade Martin to LA Kings for Williams and 4th round DP.

Sutter, Bennett, Griess, Domoulin/Harrington and 4th-5th round draft picks for help to provide playoff experience for the Pens.

Pens2014

1.) Take Williams out of the LA deal.

2.) Even though the kings are looking for some blueline depth I think they would rather trade a prospect opposed to a roster player.

3.) If kings are near a playoff position at the deadline, williams stays bc they are contenders once they make the playoffs. Sutter should be the second line center on pit. someone needs to wake up and see that malkin needs to go if they're going to win a cup any time soon

4.) Your saying Sutter>Malkin? haha

That comparsion is like Kessel is worth 5 1st round drafts, 3 top prospects, 5 mid-level prospects, and 2 top 6 young wingers.

I hope Sutter gets traded and becomes the next center thought to be a 2nd liner and disappoints like Jordan Staal.

With the Pens recently aquiring Perron from Edmonton for a 1st round pick basically. They still need to add another top 6 winger and maybe another bottom 6 to add playoff depth which they lack.

First move
Pittsburgh: Martin
________: 2nd round pick and a Offensive prospect

This makes room for a younger defenseman to step up while giving the Pens much needed salary cap relief.

Next move
Pittsburgh: 2nd round pick, Pouliot or Maata, and Goc or Spaling
________: Top line scorer (Big physical goal scorer)

This trade gives the Pens two top lines centered by Crosby and Malkin. The Pens under Shero loaded up on top defense prospects, and this trade is the reasoning behind his drafting strategies.

Move 3
Pittsburgh:Zatoff and a mid round draft pick
________: Bottom 6 winger to add solid depth for a long playoff stretch.

This trade frees up a minor league goaltending spot for one of our prospects Murray or Tristan to gain professional expierence at the AHL level.

***I left the trade partners out because its too hard to foresee which teams won't make the playoffs or need a vetern Defenseman come trade deadline. Please share your thoughts and comments on my three proposals!!

Pens2014

1.) I think pitt needs 1 more forward ( top 6 ). And looking ahead that forward might be better if he's a soon to be UFA (and left handed). Jagr/tlusty/fleishman. Use spaling and a draft pick for a deal

Kunitz-crosby-hornqvist
Perron - malkin-new player
Bennett - sutter-downie
Comeau-goc-adams / rust

2.) Personally would rather hold onto Spaling. He is a good two way player that is very versatile. Personally wouldn't mind sending Bennett and Martin and getting a good youngish LW or RW with a bit of term. Just my opinion.

3.) Willi- Is Tomas Fleischmann and his 4.5 million price tag along with his 9 points in 31 games worth what will be asking for him?

MG69- I seriously like your thoughts. You absolutely know your hockey stuff. Spaling is a great two way center on a bottom 6 line.

Out of Spaling/Goc who has more trade value?

Martin will only get us a top 6 if we package him with say Pouliot or Maata and a high draft pick. I can't see a team willing a to trade a top 6 winger for an UFA without a steep asking price. Plus Martin has limited NTC in his contract.

Every team in the league knows Bennett is injuried prone so honestly what trade value is he really worth.

4.) MG69 andPens2014, I also like Spaling but 2.2 million for someone who would be playing on the 4th line when the team gets healthy is a bit to much. You may have to move him for cap reasons. Out of the players I mentioned above, tlusty may be the best option. I believe that Fleishman would be available cheap but Fla would have to retain some salary ( he's nnot my first choice for the pens to trade for) pitt doesn't need anymore players with term moving forward until they know Dupuis long term status. Plus they have Kapanen and Sundqvist coming along who could both crack the top 9 next year.

5.) Pens2014, if you traded pouliot or maatta you wouldn't have to include martin and a high pick for a top 6, either 1 of them young D would fetch you a top 6 on their own.

6.) @willi let's not forget though that Spaling also sees some time on the PK. He is just a great depth guy to have for the playoffs whether it be 2nd, 3rd or 4th line he gets the job done as a two way player. Personally don't think Kapanen will be ready next year. Sundqvist however would be a great replacement for Adams next year. Martin is my first choice to leave. I believe him and Bennett could fetch us a solid top 6 guy. Bennett is a good young guy. I just don't feel as I'd he is going to ever hit full stride with the Pens. Don't know why just have that feeling. But I agree with your suggestions on expiring contract players to look at. I wouldn't mind a fast winger to play with Crosby. Kunitz is capable of playing with both Crosby and Malkin while being productive. So a couple guys I wouldn't mind seeing in a Pens jersey:
Skinner (price may be too high)
Grabner (speedy speedy winger who can put the puck in the net)
Hagelin (speedy speedy winger, good on the PK, play with fellow Swede)

Why does everyone think that the Pens need another fast, speedy, undersized forward?

The Pens have a few bigger forwards in the minors about 2-3 years away from a given chance.

This undersized speedy concept in the playoffs doesn't win Lord Stanley's Cup. A mixture of speed, skill, and size will get a team into the finals. EXAMPLE Boston, LA Kings recent success.

I know Boston won't trade Lucic, who I personally believe fits the ideal player the Pens should invest in.

Pens2014

1.) Zack Kassian, anyone?

2.) Kreider would look good in Pitt but I don't think those 2 division rivals would make a deal

3.) I wouldn't be disappointed if the Pens maybe atleasted tried to explore Kassian as an option. He's 6'3" 214lbs. and under contract until 2016 at 1. 75 million/per season. He hasn't been offensively productive in 21 games this season with 2G/3A. I heard that Vancouver is asking for a lot in return for the former 1st round draft pick.

@Willi you are absolutely correct the Ranger wouldn't trade Kreider to the Pens. Unless the Pens really offer a very lopsided deal favoring the Rangers. He's been decent offensively this season with 8G/12A in 37 games. Kreider would look great in a Pens jersey, imo.

I don't think both trade would ever happen. IF Florida/Pittsburgh trade did work out, it would make sense for both teams, here's why?

Pittsburgh gains a promising young top 6 winger, salary dumps Scuderi (3,375,000x2 years) while getting out of Letang's long term committment of (7,200,000x8 years). Acquiring Campbell's contract of 7,142,875 for one season will benefit the younger defensemen on this team because Martin and Ershoff most likely won't be back. This trade would free up $3,432,125 without signing RFA Huberdeau. However, that would probably go straight to his new contract.

Now Florida gets a young unknown potential player in Bennett and if healthy they get a franchise offensive defenseman in Letang for 8 years. Scuderi will be a bottom 6th defenseman but Florida has the salary cap room to add his salary.

See this trade as:
Huberdeau for Letang
Campbell for Bennett and Scuderi

I'm sorry that I think more indepth to each trade proposal. I could breakdown the second trade if you want.

Thanks Captain Canada for making me overthink a trade proposal.

IF this trade would take place, which I highly doubt. I would enjoy watching Malkin playing along side Tarasenko a fellow Russian. I'd prefer Tarasenko in a Pens jersey instead, though.

Fair trade in what way? Jets need to add or the Pens need to take out pick and change Kapanen to another prospect.

Stickboi- that team your referring to will be the New York Islanders. just a bold prediction of mine.

I highly doubt the Pens trade their 2nd round draft pick, especially for another bottom 6 winger. At this point the only way they trade this pick is in a package deal for another top 6 winger.

I see them making another Goc for Lapierre trade or two.

Bottom 6 for bottom 6 trades to get the right line combinations headed into the playoffs.

Haha might as well sign Colby Armstrong to a 5 million dollar contract.

Trade Sutter back to Carolina for Jordan Staal.

Trade your 2nd round pick back to San Jose for Tyler Kennedy.

Trade Martin to Washington to bring back Oprik.

Trade Hornquist to Dallas for Gogo.

@benn14 I don't think who ever wins the top pick will trade down because of the promising value of McDavid has.

McDavid to Edmonton, Buffalo or any team in the lottery will instantly become a fanchise piece to build around.

I'd say the 27th and 31st will get you in the range of 22-24. Why not get more prospects trading them for a 2nd and 3rd low pick/4th high pick

The top three will be:
1. McDavid
2. Hanifin
3. Eichel

McDavid should go #1 regardless of team needs, he will make the most immediate impact on a team with many needs.
