Some NHL rivalries evolve from a big game, a major trade or a short-lived scuffle, then fade after several years. Not the Philadelphia Flyers vs. the Penguins. This rivalry is real, perpetual, and, mostly, downright nasty.

Flyers All Star defenseman Kimmo Timonen will probably miss the Eastern Conference finals against the Penguins due to a blood clot in his left ankle. Philadelphia GM Paul Holmgren mentioned Timonen was hit by a shot by Montreal's Andrei Markov late in Game 4 of Philadelphia's 2nd round win over the Canadiens.

Paul Maurice was fired as coach of the Maple Leafs Wednesday after Toronto failed to make the playoffs during his 2 years. The dismissal was the 1st big move in what expects to be an active offseason for the team.

Sidney Crosby always was No.1. The No.1 most-watched youth player in Canada. A No.1 draft pick. No.1 in scoring in his 2nd NHL season. The No.1 player in the league by his fellow players' votes last season.

Winning the Eastern Conference finals could be icing on the cake for the Flyers. Actually, it would mean another cake. The Flyers savored a cake Wednesday, the dessert becoming their tasty good luck tradition before the 1st game of each playoff series.

Zach Parise's power-play goal with 8:57 remaining snapped a tie and gave the U.S a 6-4 win over Germany in a qualifying round game at the world hockey championship Thursday. The Americans appeared to have the game in hand when they scored 3 times in the opening 2:52, however Germany chipped away at the lead.

Lightning center Jeff Halpern ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the world hockey championships and expects to be sidelined until late December or early January.

Former Sabres enforcer Rob Ray is suing the NHL Players' Association for a 2nd time over money owed him during the NHL lockout, accusing the union of deceiving him into settling his initial suit 2 years ago.

The Dallas Stars beat Detroit in a competition before the 1st puck dropped Thursday night in the Western Conference finals. Swedish prospect Fabian Brunnstrom has agreed to sign with Dallas over the Red Wings and other NHL suitors.
