Sharks- Kessel, Bernier

Leafs- Couture

Sharks might have to add a dump dump, not sure. Maybe Neimi

If the leafs are actually serious about changing things up they'll make this trade. There going to have Nylander and maybe Marner as future top winger to replace Kessel and Couture and Kadri as a 1, 2 down the middle is pretty good.

The Sharks might do it if they believe Bernier can be there number 1 for the future and if they value the Kessel Pavelski chemistry. Maybe the leafs add Nashvilles first.

lots of people are posting couture trades to toronto but I think it wouldn't be in their best interest. For one I have posted before I just don't think the sharks would be willing to move couture.

For toronto they are going into a rebuild and if they end up trading kessel, phanuef, lupul its likely to be a pretty lengthy one. Couture will be 26 next season and would be at the tail end of his prime by the time the leafs rebuild started to work out. If the leafs remain where they are in the draft they will most likely pick marner or strome. Both in my mind would have to go back to junior. Strome to work on his skating he's not fast enough to keep up in the nhl and marner to build so more muscle so he isn't knocked around when he plays at the nhl level. Nylander also probably needs another year in the ahl he has been solid on the power play there but isn't consistent enough or strong enough to hold up in the nhl yet. it would take probably 3 or 4 years for these guys to hit their stride in the nhl which would make couture around 29 or 30 which means they would have wasted his prime years during a rebuild. if the leafs are going to trade kessel they should get prospects and picks to go along with their rebuild. The only way I would do this if i'm the leafs is if the get McDavid as I think he would be the only player to speed up the process and this would allow them to also trade Kadri for help on the wing having a one two punch of Couture and McDavid up the middle would be solid.

We should only consider doing that trade if Eichel, McDavid, Strome and Marner some how are off the boards and we draft Hanafin instead. Either wise I think we should just keep Kessel, it's an unpopular idea but we would finally get the number 1 center the leafs need and Kessel is just 27 years old, he is in his prime so why trade him and his value is at an all time low and we would never ever get a player that could possibly replace Kessel.

This doesn't make a lot of sense for Toronto and makes next to no sense for San Jose. San Jose can rebuild on the fly if Thornton and Marleau waive their NTCs (not likely at this point though) whereas the Leafs need a complete and thorough rebuild. Couture's talents will be wasted in Toronto as they rebuild.

Toronto needs some character people. Maybe something like a veteran centre with leadership but may be past his prime and not particularly wanted by a contender. This will bring some stability and leadership while the Leafs can develop their young players and draft picks - when they get a lot more of them. The Leafs need some veteran presence otherwise they will go through a Oilers rebuild - all young players with no direction.

Prescription for the Leafs:
Trade Kessel - his trade value is in the toilet right now, so unless the Leafs can find a GM that is higher than a kite and would offer something of value for him, wait until his numbers come way back up - if they do - because now they're horrendous.

Trade Phaneuf - or strip him of the C due to his role in numerous Leafs meltdowns. It's to the point where there's no way you can keep him in his role given the atmosphere in the Big Smoke.

Sign a veteran centre - somebody who is older, has some decent playoff experience and leadership, and can bring sanity to the dressing room.

Untradeables - Morgan Reilly. Maybe JVR as I think he can be salvaged.

Avoid retaining any salary on trades. It's better to take the upfront hit/lower return than be saddled with salary later.

Pretty thin prescription I know but that's my 2 cents in 5 minutes.

I agree with most of what you said easy e but
Depending on the term left on the contract retaining salary won't hurt the team much if at all so I'd be ok with retaining salary if the trade makes sense.

As bad as kessel has been playing most of the year his value is still high.
Underachieving, questionable attitude sounds like kessel but it also sounds like evander Kane and look at his trade return.
Also correct me if I'm wrong but people just like you said that evander Kane's trade value was in the toilet constantly before he got dealt and poof

How do they add niemi to the trade when he's a ufa at the end of the year?
