The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired forward Michael Grabner from the New York Islanders for forwards Taylor Beck and Carter Verhaeghe, defencemen Matt Finn and Tom Nilsson, and goaltender Christopher Gibson

toronto dumps contracts to have some flexibility to sign guys off waivers or the guys they offered pto's too, grabner is a solid player when healthy on an expiring contract if he has a good year they can flip him for a pick at the deadline. Obviously babcock, shanny, and lou didn't think those prospects would pan out so I have no problem on the leafs end

Nyi gets a guy that can play in the bottom 6 in beck and gain cap space off a guy that had been in and out of the lineup. They could get lucky and have one of those prospect work out.

to me makes a lot of sense from both teams.

LOL!
It's hilarious watching leafs fans try and convince themselves this trade was good. Grabner has gone downhill the past couple years and the leafs just gave up 5 players/prospects for him, including Matt Finn who so many leafers said would either get a player like Grabner on his own or would become a part of the leafs top-4 D in no time at all. And now tunes suddenly change and they're attempting to talk themselves out of a corner so they can back this weird deal that the infallible leafs management made today. It's hysterical.

I don't mind it for either team because getting Grabner wasn't the focus of the deal for Toronto. They were able to unload 5 contracts they didn't want to give them flexibility to get what they do want. And may be able to get something for Grabner later. This trade is deeper than the surface

chirp, I get what your saying with regards to finn, but he was somehow overblown into something amazing, which he never was, could turn into a 4-5 shutdown guy, I see a josh georges at best.

i do like the trade, but not because of infallible management but because it unloads a boatload of question marks for 1 question mark, who has at times played well, could play better if healthy and given a larger role than he's had in the past and be worth something at the deadline.

all high hopes I know, but grabner has a much better chnace producing in the nhl this year than those 5 combined.

the leafs have flexibility to sign guys on PTO's whom they didn't have room to sign before.

could turn into a huge blunder in 3-4 years, but I seriously doubt it. as of now it doesn't hurt the leafs one bit.

LOL chirp you're an i=diot, it was a very good deal by both sides, toronto trades a bunch of borderline prospects and getting rid of 4 contracts and nyi trades an aging winger in grabner who could still play well playing in the leafs top 6, getting rid of his cap hit. its a good move for both teams
god your leaf hate is just stupid lol

if the prospects they traded never amount to anything and they can flip grabner for something decent at the deadline then it could work out for the leafs but ovie wouldn't the best thing for the leafs this year be to suck and get a high pick again if I were in there shoes I wouldn't be trying to improve the team by adding guys like grabner.being good enough to finish 9th in the conference would be an absolute disaster.

At this point in Grabner's downslide, he is probably work Beck alone. And I'd rather have Beck who played well in Nashville last year. Finn is a plausible bottom-2, Gibson has potential to at least be a good cheap backup. Too much from Toronto and while everyone says it frees up contracts, exactly what does Toronto need with 4 available contracts right now? It was a crud trade, plain and simple.

18 Sep 2015 17:38:07
@hab. if the goal is to suck, filling your team with mediocre/on a downslide 3rd liners = sucking.

@chirp.

4 contracts = setoguchi, boyes and glencross on PTO's, and room to make a trade that brings 1 more player back in any future trade. and like I said to hab, if the goal for this season is to suck.

I actually think grabner is going to be good in t.o and I think glencross well be too.

19 Sep 2015 12:53:09
@hab
I guess it depends on what the comparative of "good" is.
That's sarcasm, btw.
Beck looks like a legit player. I'd take him over Grabner these days. Grabner still has his speed but personally I think scoring beyond 15 goals are a thing of the past.

And Glencross didn't exactly shine in WAS. So don't get your hopes up.
