Dave Nonis was probably looking around the room for hidden cameras when he got the offer for Clarkson.
This is actually a good trade for both teams though.
From Toronto's standpoint they will still have to pay Horton (who has a career ending injury) but it won't count against the cap. So they basically buy out Clarkson without it counting against the cap.
From CBJ standpoint they are a budget team and could not afford to pay Horton 28 million not to play hockey. Clarkson has showen in the past to be a 30 goal scorer. A change of scenery and getting away from the negative media attention might re-surge his career.
I know the word is CBJ offered toronto this package but it still takes 2 to make a deal like this happen. Nonis might have saved his job with the work he's done in the past 2 weeks.
Who cares about Horton and Clarkson, both players are almost useless to any team , Horton is broken and Clarkson doesn't work. Both guys are paid more than they are worth the teams just traded bad contracts. Columbus wins cause Clarkson can still play , not that it makes much of a difference either way.
@steamer do you understand that it doesn't go against Toronto's cap? Big difference. The owners are paying, they owe us one. They'll probably raise ticket prices to get their money back.

This deal made total sense for both teams.
The only people who look like fools here are the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, yeah it doesn't go against thier cap , but essentially they are paying a guy to sit on the couch. Yeah , brilliant. I hope Clarkson lights it up in Columbus for the rest season.
GOOD:
CBJ ditches a useless contract.
TOR ditches a player they highly overpaid for.
CBJ saves money.
TOR can afford the cash strap.
CBJ gets a player they are hoping can revitalize his career.
TOR opens cap space.
BAD:
CBJ gets a player that has performed well under his pay grade and still has years left. Could be a crutch down the line.
TOR opens cap space but since Horton is on LTIR, they can never go below the cap beyond what his cap hit would be if he were a player (as per the CBA) so a full rebuild where they are a bottom-cap team cannot apply as they restructure their team unless they take his contract on as part of their cap. Essentially, if they are below the cap by more than what Horton would make, they still absorb that cap hit. Not a lot of room to build with.
I'm impressed that very few leafs fans here didn't run with this trade as a "HAHA CLARKSON TRADED! EVERYONE ELSE IS DUMB!"-kinda trade. There's no clear winner here at the moment. It's a pretty darn straight-across move that (I can't believe I'm saying this): helps both teams.
Hopefully it works out for both.
