Leafs trade Nylander, Gardiner
Avs trade Makar, Kerfoot

Marleau/ Matthews/ Hyman
Kerfoot/ Tavares/ Marner
Johnsson/ Kadri/ Kapanen
Leivo/ Lindholm/ Brown
*Ennis, Jooris

Reilly/ Makar
Gardiner/ Zaitsev
Hainsey/ Ozhiganov
(Sandin/ Liljegren)

It’s a bit of a gamble on Leafs side, as Makar (who is the real target here) hasn’t played NHL yet, and Kerfoot is just breaking into the league now as a bit of a late bloomer, he had a good year last year and looks to continue to improve.

Makar and Liljegren are two of the highest rated RHD prospects in the planet. Together they will cement our RHD for the next decade.

Seems I misplaced Dermott somewhere. He’s obviously 3LHD with either Hainsey or Ozhiganov (or maybe even Liljegren) as his partner.

Nylander has more value then Makar and he’s not the deffensman Toronto needs.

Agree with vb.

How is ajar not the type of defenseman Leafs need. Every team needs an elite RHD, and Makar is projected as one of the best in the world.

I know you are thinking we need a big, heavy hitter like Parayko or Ristolainen. But the game is changing, and we already have Rasanen in the system. Speed and skill define the new NHL.

“Projected to be one of the best in the world” Makar isn’t even a top 5 prospect. Obviously he has a lot of value and he has “”potential”” to get there while it’s a long shot. Right now he is projected to be a top 4 pp dman and he could just as easily be a bust. Not every player translates to the NHL.

“Not every player translates to NHL”.
Thank you Captain Obvious.

I’m not sure what prospect reports you’re reading, but virtually every ranking I’ve read has Makar at the top, or very near, as highest ranking RHD prospect in the world.

Why Gardiner is still there.

So you think the leafs should trade a proven elite forward that’s only two years older for a question mark?

Nhl rankings has him 8th best overall and 3rd best defense, sporting news has him 15th overall and 4th best defense, that would make him an elite prospect but still just a prospect, a lot of times defenseman don't pan out, probably a sure fire nhl defenseman but does he develop into #1 defenseman is the question.

@jokinen

I didn’t slot Dermott into Gardiner’s place in the lineups after the trade. My bad. I indicated something to that effect in comments, but still neglected to take Gardiner out.

@vb

Yes Leafs should trade Nylander for Makar or Timmins. Nylander is our 4th/ 5th wheel on Leafs monster truck of a team. He’s the most expendable of the big four MMTN, and the return isn’t exactly a question mark. It’s not a question of will Makar make it to NHL, but more a matter of how good he will be. I indicated in the proposal it’s a bit of a gamble, not sure if you noticed that part. This may be the only way Leafs can land a truly elite RHD is by getting him early rather than waiting for him to prove himself further and value goes too high.

@shootsmcgee

Between Makar and Liljegren, I’m pretty sure we have our bases covered. I doubt either one is going to be a bust, and chances are greater that at least one of them will be outstanding 1RHD and the other a very effective 2RHD. Kinda like the situation we currently have at LHD with Reilly and Gardiner.

To everyone who replied. Thanks for the comments. They were very helpful. Some disagreement in terms of risk and valuation, but we did agree on at least one thing: Leafs need a 1RHD, and Nylander is our best trading chip to get one. Who that may be is left for argument sake, as we all have different opinions on what we think is best. I like big bruisers like Parayko and Ristolainen too, and they are more proven, but acquisition cost would probably be Nylander +. If we can get in eay on someone, then we can get for cheaper is all. I’m not adverse to a bit of risk if the reward is high enough.

@shootsmcgee

Only Heiskenan and Dahlin consistently rank above Makar, and they are LHD. In terms of RHD, Makar is tops, or at least top three, along with Timmins and Boqvist.

I was actually surprised the one rankings had boqvist at 10 and makar at 15, I'm a hawks fan and would be more happy if makar was Chicago property, boqvist maybe a Ryan Ellis type, which is good but makar has better potential overall.

The Facination with a “RHD” is overrated a good deffensman can play either side Makar will probably turn into a 1 dimensional 2nd pairing/ 1st pp dman like Shayne Ghostisphere if he reaches his potential.
