No. We can just wait until the summer if the Jets want to try and sign him without giving up anything. However, as good as AP is, he's likely looking for more dollars and term than he should get at his age.

Trading for a players rights is standard practice. It let's the player know you are serious. A 4th isn't a high quality asset. The only thing Winnipeg needs to consider is 1) can they afford Petrol and 2) is there better odds of signing him than the 4th round making the NHL in any meaningful capacity. If the answer to both questions is yes, then Jets make the trade, regardless of spending the 4th. Otherwise they have to wait for him to hit the open market and they lose advantage of offering the extra year.

You've actually summarized why the Jets shouldn't do it. AP is 30, so an 8 year contract shouldn't be offered anyways. The Jets are just best off waiting until he hits UFA, rather than spend an asset when they don't have to. If he wants to sign here he will, but in all likelihood AP will want too much for too long. Easy pass from Winnipeg.

Make Petro an offer when he becomes a UFA and save the 4th round pick as that's the round they picked Copp.

And Copp worked out about as best a fourth rounder could. As a bottom six player with limited offence. You don't have to offer Petrol the eight years. Offer him seven like you would in the open market. Or offer him whatever it is you feel is fair in your mind. The point is to get your foot in the door first. Fourth round picks are nothing. Winnipeg got better last year for Hayes rights. Hayes signed with Philly. Signing Petrol makes Jets contenders far more than Buff did, and he was even older, yet you guys praised Buff like he the second coming of Orr.
