Sign and trade deal

Calgary Flames:
Johnny Gaudreau resigned @9-10 mil/ yr for 8 years

Boston Bruins:
David Pastrnak @6.666 mil UFA 2023
+?

This trade proposal assumes two things:

1. Calgary can't resign Gaudreau at a salary that works for them so they can resign Tkachuk, Mangiapane, Kylington and some of their other free agents.
2. The rumors saying Pasternak won't extend in Boston are true.

Rumors have long suggested Gaudreau would like to go back east closer to home in South Jersey. Since he played college hockey in Boston it should be one of the teams he'd be willing to go to.

If both players were on similar contracts their trade values would be pretty close too but since Pasta is UFA in 1 year while they'd be getting replacement who's signed for a long time Boston would have to add something fairly significant.

What does Boston need to add to get the extra year on the contract and lower his AAV?

OGuadreau is a UFA and holds zero value. They can sign him as a UFA in a sign in trade for the 8th year he can probably return a mid round pick (4th? ) the leafs were offered a 6th for a sign and trade with Hyman ( 8 years ) but Toronto turned them down. Anyways just a awful proposal as Pasta is the better player and is actually under contract.

Gaudreau at 10M AAV for next 8 years would be one of the worst contracts in the league. He’s good now but will slow down soon….

Also IF Boston trades Pasta it’ll be under the condition that Bergeron leaves. They’ll want a package of future picks + prospects.

If Gaudreau does go to free agency he probably winds up in NJ and gets about a million/ year more on a 7 year deal than he would with an 8 year sign and trade to a team he likes.

Having an extra million/ year to pay other players with is worth something.

I did specify the trade could only happen if the rumors that Pastrnak won't extend with Boston are true. In that case this could be the only way Boston can get a player of similar value to replace him.

From Calgary's point of view they'll have to extend Pastrnak or lose him next year. That's a risk they'd be taking but they'll have more money available to help convince him next year when both Monahan's and Lucic's cap hits are off the books. It's likely the only way Calgary can get a player of comparable value to replace Gaudreau too.

I agree with Hockey Dad, that Gaudreau will likely be decent for another 4 years and then his play will fall off when he's 32/ 33. He's a Great Passer and Playmaker, but give credit to the rest of the Team he played with to be as successful as he was this year. He's not the most consistent player, hence why I'm suggesting moving forward by pursuing Forsberg and Fiala at this point OR if there is value is Trading his rights prior to him becoming a full UFA, make a deal with NJD to bring back Zacha and Graves. I also kike Bastian, Bahl and Stillman. Johnsson would be of interest, but for the price, they're better off re-signing Jarnkrok for 1/ 2 or less the price.

Yeah that 1 year is worth something…. a 4th round pick at very tops. Not Pasta.

Don't be ridiculous.

It wouldn't be trading Pasta for 1 year of Gaudreau. It'd be trading 1 year of Pasta for 8 years of Gaudreau on a new contract. The added pick would so they can get him for 8 years instead of 7 and lower his AAV.
