Can flames take that salary without sending any back? It would be very tight if they could.

I'd take that deal.

Seems like a lot for a rental, and Treliving has historically avoided them.
And until there is clarity on Kylington, it’s difficult to count him as a trade chip.

It fits salary-wise, but it’s pretty poor value to OTT for a guy who is a major goal scorer and an RFA, so they’re under no pressure to deal him.

Kylington is 25 with 47 points in 168 NHL games. He’s pretty generously paid for his 14 career NHL goals at 2.5M/ season, and is UFA after next season. He’s nothing more than salary going out the door when OTT is already expected to retain 50% on Debrincat?

The 1st and Coronato is hardly fair compensation to OTT for a true sniper with 177 G & 348 P in 418 NHL games.

? Homer Deals.

@Chickenfoot. FYI
Kylington was a late bloomer who had difficulty cracking a stacked Flames defence, but during 2021/ 22 season, he had 9g, 22a, 31pts, and was +34.
That put him ahead of the likes of Dougie Hamilton, Drew Doughty, and TJ Brodie, and others, who make 2-3x what he makes.
He is an outstanding skater, accurate passer, plays 18-20 min per game, and is only 24 hrs old. 6ft, 190lbs.
At 2.5m, his contract is actually a steal.

Correction, Kylington is 25.

And, Correction, Debrincat is reportedly looking for 8-9m/ yr in his next contract, so there is some pressure on the Sens, as they can’t afford that.

BURNER:

- Debrincat is RFA, and a noteworthy scorer in the NHL. He’s worth 8-9M in the current market. OTT has him under control as an RFA.

- They could get more in the summer when more teams are in a cap position to add him, and that is IF they wanted to. I’m not convinced they want to after making the trade to acquire him.

- regardless, if OTT truly wanted to move Debrincat, they would get a much better deal than this package in the off-season.

My call is that OTT works out an extension for him this summer. Putting the puck in the net is still the hardest thing to do in the NHL.

@Chickenfoot
What you say is true. Sens will do their best, esp after what they paid for him.
Cap hell is inevitable for teams that want to compete.

Thinking specifically of the Flames’ situation, I wasn’t convinced they would give perhaps their best prospect, a 1st, and and a d-man that could play top 4 for most teams in the league, just to then have to perform nearly impossible cap gymnastics to keep Debrincat longer than 2-3 months, rfa or not.
Even a shorter term deal for less would’ve been difficult, and Cgy can’t afford to alienate players with messy contract negotiations. Hard enough as it is to get players to come play in the cold northwest.

If they were bigger up front, and not up against the cap, then a trade like that would be well worth it for them. Flames do need scoring.

No from both teams then.

BURNER: it simply isn’t enough for a player of Debrincat’s true market value.

Every fanbase overvalues their own prospects and players, but there are WAY too many one-sided CGY deals on this site. (Even more than leaf-sided deals. )

OTT gave up a 1st, 2nd, 3rd right? Coronato was 13th OA, 1st is better than a 2nd and Kylington better than a 3rd.

EBS: from time to time I see a post that equates “where a player was drafted in the past” with their actual market value.

That’s not how it works. To use Nail Yakupov as an example, you wouldn’t say “including him in a trade is the same as including a 1st round pick”. After a few seasons his value was a late pick if anything.

Where you’re drafted doesn’t equal your asset value. Some late round picks develop into serious NHL talent, and get traded for high picks. The opposite can also be true.

The talent equivocation your using is not how NHL execs evaluate talent, and I stand by my earlier post that OTT will re-sign Debrincat, and that this proposal for him does not represent his actual market value.

The season after his draft Yakupov would’ve been worth a top 5 pick for sure. Obviously where you’re drafted matters to only a certain degree. Has Coronato done anything to be worth less than his draft spot? He’s not all of a sudden worth a 7th round pick. Regardless this package is different than the one Ottawa gave up but similar value wise IMO.

Also if anything DeBrincat’s value has dropped. Less productive season and a worse contract.

EBS: I will wholeheartedly agree Debrincat hasn’t helped his value this year, but it’s always GREAT to have an RFA in your lineup who is playing for his next contract:

- If he crushes it, and you can re-sign him, great.
- if he crushes it, but can’t be re-signed, he’s a valuable trade asset.
- if he doesn’t have a good season, at least you know before you sign him long-term (or not) . ?.
