MTL: Matheson (1yr left x 4.875m)
CHI: Jones @ $2M retained (now 5yr x 7.5m), TOR 2025 1st
Hawks unload Jones at steep price, getting immediate cap space to go big-game hunting. Matheson has proven ability to shelter a young D-corps, and would easily fetch a haul (1st+) at next year’s deadline.
Habs get big veteran RHD at a now-reasonable price who will play heavy minutes + PP2 throughout his deal. Provides time and shelter to Reinbacher & Mailloux, and gives the Habs time to draft and develop a Jones-replacement.
Long term who says no to
Hutson - Jones
Guhle - Reinbacher
Xhekaj - Mailloux/ Carrier/ Replacement.

Jones performance are just going downward, even at 7.5 M, i dont think habs need him.

MTL has more cap space and flexibility with Matheson, who is from MTL, and likely to re-sign if they chose to.
If MTL wanted to trade Matheson next year, they’d get a 1st and a 3rd easily for him, so no rush to make the deal a year early.

Jones has positive value imo 9 million with the cap rise of 23ish million over the next 3 years isn’t much. he’s still a top 2 dman on most teams. He’s solid on both ends of the ice. It’s rumoured Stars are interested especially with Heiskanen out.

No, Chicago would make a hockey trade, forget the first round and retention. A mid 6 for a top 2 and a first and retention? That is called highway robbery. Like when calgary traded monahan to Montreal.

I am not much of a Matheson guy - viewing him as a "no D" D'man. Chicago says no.

Definitely would take jones at 7.5 for 4 years then Matheson at 6.85 for 1 and still pay another 3 years for it and a 1 round pick. this is ridiculous.
