Rutherford could be desperate to make one last stab at a Stanley before Malkin's contract renewal comes up, so let's assume this trade scenario depends on Byfuglien retiring and Rutherford trying to make a splash:

Pittsburgh:
Justin Schultz
Patrick Hornqvist
2020 1st round pick

Winnipeg:

Patrick Laine

Pittsburgh signs Laine to a 3 year bridge deal $28.5m (9.5m aav)

Winnipeg signs Schultz to a 5 year $36.25m (7.25m aav)

*again, this doesn't happen unless Buff retires*

No, as this offer doesn't give the Jets the one quality player that they would want in return in order to justify trading Laine. The Jets will hold on to Laine even if it means he holds out this season, until he signed a reasonable contract and they will match any RFA offers.

23 Sep 2019 17:06:45
Wow. Now that's the way to come out and state that you have no idea of player values and can't evaluate things objectively.

You actually believe that a 29 year old UFA to be defenseman and a 32 year old bottom 6 winger that the Jets have zero need for is fair value for a 21 year old elite winger?

Wow just wow. You're like a little kid. You're going to stomp your feet and hold your breath because Jet fans don't like your lowball offers.

Yes, I know that to you, Jet fans turning down lowball offers is the same thing as saying we won't trade Laine for anything in the world.

Wow.

23 Sep 2019 17:18:14
Rather those two guys than Laine.

23 Sep 2019 17:34:11
Memarcusjoe your such a homer. lol.

23 Sep 2019 17:58:10
@Islandjet. I know eh, such a generous offer. I really am incorrigible! lol.

23 Sep 2019 18:27:26
PIT had a one dimensional goal scorer who was terrible defensively and on a contract less than what Laine is asking for - and they traded him away. I don't think they would do this IMO.
I think PIT's window is shorter than WPG and they can afford to wait. Although this would be good for Laine to have two solid and experienced leaders to learn from in Crosby and Malkin.

23 Sep 2019 18:34:00
I see Dave tucked his tail and ran. I would love to hear his convoluted reasoning for how this is in any way a fair offer. Lol.

23 Sep 2019 18:44:36
For a player that is as useless as Laine with so many holes in his game it seems a lot of posters would love to have him on their favorite teams giving the Jets nothing in return.

23 Sep 2019 18:48:10
Funny when you don’t reply to questions either.

23 Sep 2019 19:07:40
What would you want from Pitts Marcus? Names.

23 Sep 2019 19:08:17
You know it's a really, really, bad offer for the Jets, when only one of the normal trolls has come out to defend it.

23 Sep 2019 19:18:16
You haven’t replied to unsportsmanlike’s question from 2 weeks ago yuppie. Remember deflecting the question to talking about pizza? Yes my feelings are hurt. See if you can come up with something else bitch!

23 Sep 2019 19:37:00
lol, did i just get called a troll?

23 Sep 2019 20:02:24
LMAO how many times did you click refresh to see if I replied back? What exactly of this offer screams unfair? Your team has a 34 year old broken right handed defenseman and a 21 year old sniper that thinks he's worth Marner money because he broke records 2 seasons ago.

You've already gave me your piss poor logic 2 days ago telling me that you think this is a hold out and wait season for the Jets. Its funny how you'll throw the towel in on an entire season over a 21 year old players contract holdout when the league, the team, the organization, the fans, the COUNTRY all expect the Jets to be cup contenders this year.

I offer a 29 year old RHD that can be re-signed for less than Buff as his replacement, and a top 6 scorer to plug into Laines vacant spot. I assume you'd call him a 3rd liner because he's 32 and to you that's the definition of regression.

23 Sep 2019 20:45:02
What exactly screams fair in that offer Dave? Lol.

Just ignore that Schultz is an upcoming UFA and a victim pairing D. And ignore that Hornqvist is a winger which is the absolute last thing the Jets need especially when his production puts him firmly as a bottom 6 player.

You can try and justify it all you want, but you're embarrassing yourself, you and I know you were shooting for a troll offer. You just went so overboard that even the normal trolls won't back you up. Lol.

23 Sep 2019 22:50:23
He's a good winger, but by no means is he elite. He is an exceptional one dimensional, streaky, talented winger. The Pens traded away one of those this past summer. If he isn't scoring, he isn't effective. Hornqvist doesn't score as many goals, but he plays a much better all around game. Schultz is a great second pair RHD that wants to be a Pen. I just don't see why the Pens do this. The Jets are in an absolute world of hurt with no Connor, no Laine, and no Buff for the foreseeable future.

24 Sep 2019 00:08:38
Yes MG69, you can parrot all the hot takes you read on this site, but it doesn't make them true. Laine is inarguably elite. Only a handful of players have done what he has done at his age. So you're really displaying your lack of hockey knowledge and showing that you can't be objective with your post.

Pittsburgh wouldn't be able to say yes fast enough while Jets would take it as a joke and bit call back.

24 Sep 2019 01:34:13
The Pens wouldn't take that deal though. They wouldn't offer it in the first place because it weakens their defense which has been a need for a year or so now. It's not a hot take it's the truth. When he's scoring he is in fact showing his elite offensive skills. But when he is streaky, and he is that frequently, he is a ghost out there. He doesn't make the players around him better, the players around him make him better. He is lack luster defensively. Elite players go through streaks of poor offensive output, but they make up for it in some other aspect of their game, he doesn't. If you can prove me wrong then by all means do so, but I think you're smart enough to even realize you can't. You are only as good as your last season and last season he had what 50 points? 30 goals, 15 on the PP playing with one of the best set up guys in Wheeler and an ever improving Schieflie. Sorry, but you haven't sold me on him being even close to being Elite. He could be, but as of right now he is just an exceptional offensive talent that is frequently streaky and doesn't make up for the lack of offensive output in anyway shape or form.

24 Sep 2019 11:22:10
Laine is nothing special, yes he has the potential to score tons of goals but unlike Ovechkin he does not hit, does not come back on the defensive and does not fight hard in the corners for the puck. He has the potential to be a 70+ point unidimensional goal scorer. Does are not elite and so is Laine. If he gets 40+ goals this year but also 40+ assist then I might say he's elite and will be for years to come. That's if he plays at all and dosnt pull a Nylander.

24 Sep 2019 16:01:45
No from Winnipeg on this one. Not enough youth.

24 Sep 2019 19:32:41
No from Winnipeg although when I look at the talent drop off on Pitts after Crosby and malkin that 1st could easily be a lottery pick.

25 Sep 2019 16:57:03
Funny how marcus thinks elite wingers are 1 dimensional players
that get 50 points. Kane, panarin, kucherov. These guys are elite and maybe one day Laine can be elite but he certainly not right now.

25 Sep 2019 23:54:14
no from peg, as much as laine is phil kessel 2.0, and not ovie 2.0 theyd want a good younger player coming back.

laine, as much as he crushed in his rookie season he is a 1 trick pony. i'm not saying he's not worth anything. he just doesn't want to play on the 2nd line with a coach who makes players earn their ice time.

he wants to play on the powerplay 19 minutes a night.

hes not a real hockey player to me. he's a shooter.
