Here’s the thing, if the leafs are making this trade to get Pesce, they could simply sign someone else, like Vatanen, Gudas, or Shattenkirk.

Then they could simply trade Marner for two very skilled young cheap forwards, like Max Comtois and Sam Steel or Pavel Zacha and Jack Hughes (Just examples don’t take it too seriously)

The point is, the leafs could get a lot more simply by signing two FA defenders and the trading Marner for significant futures.

I wouldn’t do that from a leafs POV personally. Value wise it’s in favour of Carolina they atleast should give Toronto their 1st back and where does Neces even fit in? 3C? Who replaces Marner? I don’t like Necas as a fit he’s a valuable piece that is not needed by Toronto.

So apparently you haven't heard much about Necas. He plays wing on the Hurricanes and is a very highly skilled, highly regarded forward.

Mostleaf, the names you mention do not make the defense better. You named 3 dmen, all of which are mediocre at best.

For the Leafs to get any better they have to get at least 1 top end dmen. Like I said to vb on my last post, I guess you are willing to settle at being just a top ten team and not a cup contender because current defense structure or even adding one of the three names you suggest would not make them cup contenders.
The defense I listed makes them cup contenders while still having top two lines of Matthews Nylander Johansson and Tavares Hyman and Necas or Kapanen. A well rounded team.

Cherry I mean if they still signed Pietrangelo as well, and the names I listed were just examples. There is also TJ Brodie, Justin Shultz, and Tavis Hamonic. Their defence would look like:

*Liljgren

They wouldn’t need another star studed defenceman, just someone who could fill into their top 4. They could even keep Holl if they wanted, and there is always the option to trade Dermott for someone to fill in that spot.

Retentions is needed on Staal leafs can’t pay a 3C 6 million. Slavin will not be moved but that’d be nuts and Dermott has no value to Carolina Bean and Flury are waiting on the left side already consisting of Slavin, Edmonston and Gardiner.

Leafs will be fine with a healthy lineup and Babcock gone.
