Calgary - Mark Giordano for
St Louis - Alex Pietrangelo
I have a hunch Treliving is going hard after Pietrangelo.
Pietrangelo gets his 8 year contract, St Louis gets a still pretty good defenseman with a lower cap hit and shorter term. Calgary gets a new number 1 defenseman who should be good for at least a few more years and will help groom Andersson and/ or Valamaki for the the top spot in the future.
The part I don't like is that's a very long contract for a 30 year old player at what's going to be a big cap hit. If Pietrangelo declines quickly it'll work out very badly for Calgary in the long run.

I think we’re going to see Petro in a Flames jersey but why would they trade for his UFA rights? They can probably get a first round pick and a prospect for Giordano. Why not just sign Petro in free agency and trade Gio to a contender?

Agree with NotACasual. Also the 7 year term might be better for Calgary than 8 years.

Who would want mark giordano at this stage of his career. HE IS 36 YEARS OLD. Retirement will come sooner rather than later.

@NotACasual It's a sign and trade, that's how you get 8 years.
@Monkeyful possibly but the extra year is usually more attractive to the player and if it's for a lesser amount it lowers the AAV a bit and makes a potential buyout in the later years easier too.
@BumbleBeeTuna18 lots of teams would want Gio with just 2 years left on his contract. The Blues for one, Gio is a good short term option for them if they can't fit Pietro under the cap and keep him.
