CGY - Sam Bennett, 3RD

TOR - Nick Robertson, Alex Kerfoot

It’s something Nick Kyprios mentioned and at first I scoffed at trading Robertson. But then you start to think and it makes some sense. Leafs want a player to play middle 6. Bennett can play C/ W, hits, has some skill, will fight If needed. I think this would allow Hyman to play 3rd line and help be a more shut down role which he’s great at.

Kerfoot goes the other way to fill Bennett’s spot and make the money work. Bennett makes $2.5 vs Kerfoots $3.5M so it creates cap flexibility and total contract flexibility since it’s 2-for-1. Not 100% sure on CGYs interest in Robertson but don’t know many teams not intrigued by 19 year olds with big offensive upside potential.

Lmao this is such a joke Robertson won’t be moved he is the youngest player to play a NHL playoff game. He realistically could be better then Marner in a couple of years.

Bennet has been 4th line for Calgary he is a great bottom 6 guy in the playoffs but you don’t trade a potential super star for that you trade a mid pick.

Toronto is a really good team. They want to be a great team. Great teams give up young players or good picks to get pieces to give them a better chance to win. Tampa gave up 2 first round picks and a prospect they just used a 1st on (so basically 3 1sts) for 2 bottom 6 forwards last year, in Goodrow and Coleman.

Bennett’s numbers have been underwhelming and he’s obviously never going to live up to his draft position but his offensive output takes a big jump in playoff games vs regular season showing there’s another level when games mean more. (11G in 30 playoff games, vs 65 in 378 reg season) . There is value in that.

And I get falling in love with a second round pick that followed up his draft with a massive year in junior but I remember hearing a lot of the same conversations about Jeremy Bracco. Not saying he’s going to be a bust like Bracco, I don’t think he is. I think he would be good for Calgary. But you have to give something good up to get better. Teams aren’t giving impact players for garbage to help the Leafs.

Bennetts 11g in 30 playoff games is very solid. Tavares has 15g in 36 playoff games, Stamkos has 24g in 71G which is about the same ratio. Gaudreau and Monohan have 8g and 10g respectively in the same exact 30 games Bennett has his 11. Bennett isn’t those players, I’m aware, but he’s out performed much better players while doing things that those guys don’t do, like play physical.

Better than Marner maybe in a few years. I highly doubt that VB. its probably comparible to me thinking Romanov will be a perennial Norris contender. Both will be good players, but more than likely not Superstars.
Also, I agree with Sampson, about pretty much everything he said in this one, Bennet I think could put ya over the hump, and finally "1967" is a think of the past. He may not continue his offensive jump he has in the playoffs, but his grit he adds will be beneficial for the Leafs come playoff time.

Sampson said it better than I ever could

Thanks Sosa. And I agree, better than Marner is a little out there for a guy that had a good junior year and then didn’t look great in his NHL exposure. I think he will be a solid point producing player, but when Marner got his first sniff of action, you could see he had things to work on, but could also see he was a special player. I mean, he’s 3rd in the league in scoring behind Connor and Leon, if that’s what fans are expecting from Robertson, they better be ready for disappointment.

Bennet is worth a 3rd round pick not Nick Robinson.

Just last draft, leafs got Robertson at the end of the 2nd round.

I get his progression has been good since then, but he’s a mid to late 2nd rounder and yet you’re spazzing like I’m saying it should be Lafrenniere for Bennett.

You keep saying Bennett is worth a 2nd or 3rd and yet here’s a kid picked late 2nd round and yet you think he could be better than marner. it makes no sense.

I think he will be a good player. I think he will score far more than Bennett. But Bennett is what the leafs need now. Robertson is not. Andersen’s contract is up this year. Rielly next year. 2 years after that its Matthews and Nylander and the following one is Tavares and Marner. Incase you haven’t figured it out, leafs have a window. And that window isn’t going to stay open long enough to see if Robertson is a 25+G scorer or not. Going to have to make decisions on young players soon.
