Reilly probably gets Columbus talking but they'll want the add to be someone bigger and better than Robertson. Heck Columbus might even take Kerfoote, they need centers.

The dcore isn’t the problem with the team. I genuinely think that running back the same 6 dmen next year would be better than trying to trade or sign another dman for an exorbitant cost, although, I think anyone could play well alongside Muzzin (so Holl can kick rocks) and Dermott should be gone as well.

The forwards should be at blame, especially Marner and Matthews. Can’t blame the guy who was concussed and sitting in the stands and can’t blame the guy who went 5-3-8 throughout. I think as it stands, the right move is to trade one of Matthews or Marner, preferably Marner, and not for another 11 million dollar guy like a Jack Eichel, but for pieces that can compliment the team. I’ve realized now, it took me long enough, that hockey isn’t basketball. You can’t pump 40 million into 4 dudes and expect anything more than the garbage that we got. Hockeys a team sport before anything, and you need good depth. Hell, colorados a perfect example. Their top line is phenomenal, but beyond that? Donskoi, Nichuskin, Compher, Jost, Burakovsky, Kadri, Newhook, etc. They have good depth pieces that can help. The leafs had Alex Kerfoot and the old Jason Spezza in that steed. Ilya Mikheyev, Pierre Engvall, Joe Thornton, Wayne Simmonds, Riley Nash and Adam Brooks combined for 2 points in the series. Corey Perry outscored them. But the Leafs can’t sign anyone better cause they got 40 million tied into the four forwarda and 15 mill tied into the top 3 dmen. Getting rid of Mitch Marner for the highest price is the most important, and willget high price, cause he did still have a remarkable regular season and was a great player, and teams like LA, Anaheim, etc. would all be looking for that young, elite talent like him. If I’m guessing, the leafs are going to get something better than the Patches return for Marner - a good replacement level 2nd line winger, a high end prospect, and probably a 1st or so. Going 1for1 for Eichel, or for Doughty, or for Jones fixes nothing. Trading a guy like Marner tells the rest of the team that no ones f****kng safe on this team, and by getting some quality depth, the team can be a little bit more balanced.

@TopShelfSlappers

BINGO!

Unfortunately for the Leafs' I doubt their GM will ever figure that out.

Take it from a Flames fan, Brodie is not part of the solution, he's a big part of the problem. Soft, contact adverse, incapable of clearing players from the front of the net and prone to making costly mistakes when things get rough.

@TSS I disagree. Marner + Matthews + Nylander is a playoff team year after year and will continue to get better. They’re young and nerves got to them.
It would have to be a crazy offer for the Leafs to even think about.
One example could be Marner + 2022 first for Chychrun and Garland.

@Mox

To be fair, I really liked Brodie, even in the playoffs. He doesn’t do much, but compared to Leafs dcores of past consisting of Nikita Zaitsev, Cody Ceci, Tyson Barrie, Roman Polak, Ron Hainsey and such, its a welcome addition. I get that he doesn’t offer much physicality and isn’t a great offensive guy, but really all the leafs need back there on the pairing with Morgan is a guy who doesn’t do much and doesn’t make huge mistakes like Gardiner used to. Through one year, I’d say he’s filled the role quite well. I quite like the Leafs dcore for now and for the forseeable futur, its the forwards roster makeup that is where all the questions should be directed.

@Webs
Thats the problem. Willy/ Mitch/ Auston as a trio is a great RS team. They haven’t been able to do anything in the playoffs for five years, even if the WSH/ TOR series was just a fun run. Mitch is a damn good player, but he’s a crux of a problem - not wanting to move around on the powerplay (its true, he was the reason that the stacked unit struggled bc he preferred the halfwall spot), forcing hjmself to play with Auston, demanding the A from the Leafs and getting 11 mill from the team. That’s a player who, simply put, doesn’t respect his organization and his boss. And if one guy doesn’t respect the organization, what's that going to do? It’s going to create a ripple effect wherein no ones going to give any respect to Dubas and Shanahan, and that's why the team is so willing to take games off every time. Cause Dubas guaranteed them safety, and all three of them - not Tavares again, because you can tell that he has some form of maturity - don’t NEED to be playing for their job security. Only Nylander showed up, the 22.5 million dollar duo said f*** this, let's book our tickets to the keys and enjoy our summers, cause well both be back here next year making that same fat check in the richest city in the NHL with fans who are dumber than doorkobs who continue to come back to us. If Dubas wants to show this team that he’s the damn boss of the team, he ends this toxic culture now and instils some fear into the likes of Matthews, Nylander and Rielly by gutting Marner for his atrocious play.

Maybe its an overreaction on my part. It really might be. But this is the culture that the older bum GMs who can’t make a trade and can’t draft for s*** bring to teams. If Dubas wants to take control of this team, he stops making promises to guys who haven’t done s*** for him, stops getting influenxed by the media and the fans, and builds a team around Auston Matthews, John Tavares and other good pieces.

01 Jun 2021 17:44:44
Yeah that’s definitely an over reaction people are acting like Marner and Mathews didn’t try and didn’t play great. I watched every game 2x this series I’m in quarantine with nothing better to do so I’ve been dedicating a lot of free time to this. Marner and Mathews played there hearts out. Marner had 4 or 5 shots that would’ve been a goal on a regular goalie 75% of time and people are acting like it’s Marners job to score goals. Marner isn’t or never was a goal scorer he’s a opportunistic playmaker who scores goals because he’s in the right place at the right time. He was there and was robbed by price multiple times. Look at Mathews. Marner did his job on putting the puck on his tape and Mathews didn’t score. Is that because of a lack of effort or because of being shadowed by Philip Danault and Price the whole game. It definitely wasn’t the lack of effort. I’m a goalie and I can tell you when I’m playing against a team with a great player on it I make it my mission to stop that player that’s what price did hockey is a mental game and price came prepared.

There can only be one team that wins a series and Montreal’s team was built to beat the leafs. Danault looked like the McDavid of shut down centres that series.

That being said I would not mind seeing Marner traded for a younger cheaper option and draft capital.

@TopShelf

Heh, you'll learn about Brodie eventually. Believe me, he's the defensive equivalent of Marner or Gaudreau. I'm utterly amazed that people in Toronto believe he's actually good defensively. He's not, especially not when the going gets rough in the playoffs. Brodie doesn't make Reilly look good, it's the other way around. Reilly is only the 2nd partner Brodie has ever looked good with, Gio being the other. Brodie was soso with Chris Russel and a complete disaster with every other defenseman not named Giordano in Calgary.

Also while I've always ascribed to the theory that Nylander is soft and lazy he was the Leaf's best forward in the playoffs this year. He's the only one of the top 4 that actually worked hard and produced in the playoffs. In the waning minutes of game 7 Nylander looked pissed off, everyone else on the Leafs looked shocked, sad or confused and resigned to losing.

In the past I've always said I wouldn't want Nylander on my Flames in spite of his being a big right shot top 6 RW (the Flames biggest need for years) and from Calgary to boot. After his playoff performance this year I'm thinking he might be good with the Flames after all.
