They let Alex Pietrangelo go because they didn't want to pay him nearly 9 mil a year. If they won't pay a number 1 D who was also their captain that much there's no way they'd take on a small winger making nearly 11 mil a year.

You have them giving up 2 good young players on entry level contracts and a first round pick too.

Lol I think this forum has just become leaf haters. I don’t like the Leafs but they still won 56 games.
You all act like taking on salary is the worst thing a team can do. if you’re getting 67 points in 55 games its a contract worth taking.
The Leafs would be dumb to trade Marner tho, they were the best regular season team in the North and just choked in the playoffs. I think they just need to hire a couple new assistant coaches and bring up their young prospects.

Not at all, it's just that most of the completely ridiculous trade proposals come from Leafs fans.

They seem to think all of their players are worth several of the best players on every other team.

Leafs are built for the regular season, not the playoffs. If they want to fix that, they're going to have dump at least one of the players in the 4 for 40 club. Matthews is the only one of the bunch that's worth his salary, Tavares has a NMC and Nylander was the best of the bunch in the playoffs this year. That leaves Marner.

And yes taking on huge salaries in a flat cap environment is about the worst thing a team can do right now. That's further compounded by the upcoming expansion draft.

@Moxnix I mean they still made the playoffs. That’s like saying Calgary needs to trade Tkachuk because he can't even bring a very solid team to the playoffs. It’s all his fault that they underperformed and he isn’t even worth close to 7M.
Blaming a few players who all had great years and brought their team to the playoffs is not the solution. It’s not their job to worry about the money, that’s the job of the GM and management team.
