Just a thought I had due to the hole left by Kreicji in Boston at 2C:

Boston Trades:
Debrusk $3.675
Smith $3.8
2022 1st
Studnicka

Calgary Trades:
Monahan 6.375

Cap nearly evens out. Flames try to get best value they can for Monahan while they can. Bruins get their 2C who can play 1C if injuries occur.

Not sure who adds? Is this close?

Interesting. I don't know enough about Studnicka or Smith to say but at least they're both right shots.

Smith is 30 years old has good size and his career stats look ok. If he has grit (or at least isn't soft) and plays a good two way game he could be a very useful middle 6 RW. He has 2 years left on his contract which IMO is perfect for the Flames needs right now.

Studnicka at 6'1" 172 lbs probably needs to fill out a bit more but he's still young. He doesn't have much NHL experience and I don't how much upside he has but if he can make the team at RW or center he'd be a nice addition.

Debrusk. The Flames don't need another LW. He's not a bad player but his salary is too high for where he'd be on depth chart at LW in Calgary. Still they could probably find a use for him somewhere or just flip him elsewhere.

The first round pick will likely be a late one but it's always nice to have more first round picks.

Overall I think it's a pretty decent offer but Boston might need to retain a little salary to make it work for the Flames.

Boston: Hard no. Take out Studnicka, at the very least.

I like it obviously but I think it’s an overpayment from Boston.

@Moxnix, thanks for the in-depth analysis. I thought about retention but just taking a look at Cap friendly I thought both teams were pretty cap strapped so it needed to be even. That’s why I threw both players in there.

I don’t know if any Bruins fans here could speak to Debrusk playing the opposite side. If so then this trade would give them depth at wing.

Hopefully Studnicka’s upside or the first can help Calgary fill out their C depth that is weakened with Monahan moved.

Wanted to share more of my thoughts on putting this together, to me it seems interesting as I don’t see Coyle/ Haula being the replacements for Kreicji. Plus Boston is in a win now mode.

@Datsyuk_Fan13 The reason I said Boston might have to retain a bit is Debrusk and Smith combined cap hit is $1.1 million higher than Monahan's and that's not even counting Studnicka's cap hit.

@seabass From the Flames PoV if they take anything out it would be Debrusk but then Boston would have trouble fitting Monny under the cap.

@Moxnix, yes you’re right there. My math was off I thought it was even and didn’t realize it was over. Yeah that makes sense to retain enough to make the cap even of $1.1 difference.

Debrusk and Smith looked like the only two players that would be open to trading by Boston and at an even cap hit. Not sure if Studnicka’s readiness is at NHL or if he needs more time to develop. If he needs another year in AHL, then that would give Flames time to work around to fit him.

Just an overall thought, What if Debrusk was moved in another deal somewhere else for Bruins to clear cap (picks/ prospects in return)

Then the deal is:

Smith
Studnicka
Conditional 2nd ( 2nd that becomes 1st if Bruins reach conference finals)

Flames:
Monahan

No retention needed as Bruins cleared room in separate deal. Also put a condition on the first to account for Studnicka being higher value than I originally thought.

Would this make sense for both clubs?

22 Aug 2021 21:26:02
@Datsyuk that one seems pretty good. Maybe change the condition to if Monahan gets over 60-65 points. And add retention from Calgary to make the money work.

22 Aug 2021 23:39:47
I could live with that with the conditional pick @Websjac suggested.

22 Aug 2021 23:55:22
@websjac that would be a really good idea aswell.

23 Aug 2021 16:34:06
@Webs, I definitely like that idea for the condition. That seems like one that would work for both and encourage Monahan’s efforts potentially.

Although I don’t see retention needed if they clear Debrusk is another trade. So they make room to fit in Monahan’s cap.
