New Jersey Trades
TY Smith
3rd Round Pick 2022
4th Round Pick 2022

Toronto Trades
Rielly
Dermott
Engvall

Devils have drafted well for the last 3 to 4 seasons to the point they have the building blocks to take that next step of starting to contend, yes TY Smith is a good young Defenceman but they do also have other very good prospects on Defence knocking on the door within the next few seasons, NJ is one team that have enough money to resign Rielly and signing Hamilton this off season tells me they are ready to take the next step, this proposal continues that process.

The Leafs are in a situation where more than likely Rielly won't be resigning as the Cap won't let that happen, Dubas is smart enough to understand if you can take a step back to take a step forward for the future he will do it, just like he did when he traded Kapanen and Johnsson, trading all 3 of these players to get a very good young Defenceman, plus get back the 3rd and 4th Round Picks he traded at last season's deadline is that step back, step forward type of trade proposal.

not really sure why the devils do this knowing they would have to pay Rielly big money after this year after paying big money to get Hamilton, think they would rather keep their young d man and grow from there. dermott and engvall have no value so i think the devils say no to this one.

Signing Hamilton tells the league they are going to the next stage, PKs 9 million will be off the books after this season, so you give Rielly 9 million NJ still has 12 million in Cap to spend next season.
NJ is in a great situation to get better right now, so why wouldn't you show the players and fans that yes you are trying to win from this season on?

Teams wouldn't give up too much for Rielly who is going to be UFA at the end of the season and will want way more than he's worth to resign.

Jersey will also have to sign Jack Hughes. I can't see them wanting Reilly, for one season. They have there big FA signing in Hamilton, with Smith and younger Hughes coming in soon, this is a good nucleus.
Don't get me wrong, Reilly is a really good Dman, however, I don't believe he fits the need for Jersey.

Also, doesn't this create a hole for the Leafs? Smith is good, but not Reilly good, at least not yet.

Pinballisback. exactly that, Subbans money is coming off the books and they can go in to free agency next season and sign players with out giving up a good young controllable asset when chances are they are still a year or two away from competing. Reilly is a good dman no doubt but he doesn't them a Stanly cup contender this year along with paying 2 dman that kinda money and still having to sign their young
core players like Hughes, etc doesn't make it likely. besides if they really want Reilly there is a good chance they can sign him as a free agents next summer.

You are saying NJ should just be ok with being a bottom feeder team?
Sorry unless this is Detroit or Arizona The Devil's are now in the second phase of there rebuild, they are much better than you are painting them and they wouldn't have signed Hamilton if they thought like you are.

Pinballisback.
i didn't say they were ok with being a bottom feeder, i said they are a year or two away from contending. this was a team that finished 3rd from the bottom last year, that doesn't mean that they can't improve this year and Hamilton will help that but they still have a ways to go. they have a good young core they are building and they are in the second phase of 5 phase process Reilly would help but he doesn't make them a cup contender this year so again why give up any assets when chances are Reilly will be a free agent next year and if you really want him you can get him and not give up anything?

Leafs went from the worst team to a playoff team the next season and haven't looked back since.
NJ to me is in that same situation right now, adding Rielly, Dermott and Engvall over keeping TY Smith makes them much better right away.
You can try and argue it doesn't but you would be wrong.

hate to break it to you pinball but engvall and dermott have no value the only one that does is Reilly who wants a monster deal after this season if he didn't the leafs would keep him. no wonder people pan your trades on here logic clearly escapes you.

It's going to be funny when the Leafs find out how bad Brodie is after Reilly is gone. Reilly and Gio are the only 2 partners who've been able to make Brodie look good.

I stopped reading when I got to the sentence. ". Dubas is smart. " lol.

I mean he has a PHd in analytics but that doesn’t mean he’s good at contract negotiations. He’s a solid GM imo. Good with trades and the UFA market ( Marleau was signed by Lou ) . RFA negotiations is where he struggles. He got Nylander signed to a sweet deal but obviously Mathews and Marner not so much.
