That'd be a blockbuster all right. Probably the biggest trade of the decade, maybe the century, at least in sheer number of players involved.

While it'd be good for Calgary I can't see Jersey going for it. They'd be getting older and paying more for it.

Basically the core of your trade boils down to this

To New Jersey:
C Sean Monahan @6.375mil UFA 2023
LD Jussi Valimaki @1.55mil RFA 2023
TOTAL @ $7.925mil

To Calgary:
C/ LW Pavel Zacha @2.24mil RFA 2022
LW A. Johnsson @3.4mil UFA 2023
TOTAL @ $5.64mil

No way Jersey does that, getting older, more expensive and taking on quite a bit of risk too.

The rest of the players as a group favors Calgary even without throwing Pitlick in there.

There has to be something in it for the Devils. I don't think Monahan + Valimaki is enough for Zacha alone which is why I threw in the conditional pick in my proposal.

Thinking about it a bit more maybe my original proposal with Jakob Pelletier a 2nd replacing the conditional pick might be more appealing to the Devils.

Or what the heck, Calgary could even make it Monahan (with no retention) + Valimaki + Pelletier + Ruzika for Zacha. Maybe even replace one of those players with Dube.

Pretty stupid idea… also :

Monahan > Zacha
Dube > Bratt
Johnsson > Pitlick
Graves > Zadorov
Pelletier > Stillman
Valimaki.

Sorry for saying it was a stupid idea but like cmon, there’s way too much going on right here that I’m uncertain about if you’re trolling or not.

@NotACasual I have to disagree.

The old Monahan was better than Zacha but right now he's not. I'm no longer confident he's going to recover his old form again either, especially not after seeing how he played in the last game. He was indecisive, playing very tentatively and made several horrible pass attempts that didn't have enough on them to travel much more than a few feet. Easily tipped or intercepted on all of those.

I'm starting to wonder if he isn't injured again already.

Also have to consider Zacha was the highest producing player on a bad team last year and is their top producer again this year. On a better team with better linemates his production will be going up. He's bigger, faster and younger than Monahan and he has skill too.

As for the rest of the players with Pitlick taken out it's pretty much a wash or slightly in Calgary's favor due to getting younger and cheaper. Having him in there tilts things further in favor of Calgary.

Zacha (24-RFA2022) > Dube (24-RFA2024, but Dube has better term)
J. Bratt (23-RFA2022) = Valimaki (23-2023RFA) + Pitlick (30-UFA2022)
Monahan (27-UFA2023) > A. Johnnson (26-UFA2023)
Pelletier (20-RFA2024) > C. Stillman (18-RFA2024)

Zacha is set for a raise, whereas Dube is RFA @ 2.3mil till 2024
Bratt is also set for a raise, Valimaki is RFA @ 1.55mill till 2023, but now gets to play and become a Top-4 D in New Jersey, wheras I think he's lost that opportunity in Calgary and has started venting and whinining about it.
Yes, I understand Monahan is a bit of a gamble, but I still believe he can produce and just needs a bit more time to fully recover from his offseason surgery, he's still only 27 remember and most importantly he gives New Jersey a proven and established veteran center to teach, groom and bring up the youngsters (Hughes, Hischier and Dawson) . If Monahan doesn't work out, you're free of him in 2023 = next year.
Pelletier sounds like a really good playmaker, but I think Stillman might be a better fit for the Flames with more size and tenacity and his father is an alumni.

I agree, super busy/ complicated trade, but I don't see New Jersey getting much older. Monahan is a leader and brings a ton to the locker room, not just the ice, New Jersey also gets a young stud LD in Valimaki with high potential as well as Dillon Dube who given 1st/ 2nd line minutes should replace Zucha's scoring and both are already on good contracts, saving New Jersey millions over the next couple years till they're ready to buy and contend.

Where I might be a bit off, but was hoping the rest of the deal helped balance everything out is Ryan Graves (26-UFA2023@3.17mil) > for Nikita Zadorov (26-UFA2022@3.75mil) . Same age, similar salary, just a year less term. I'm just looking for a better skater and more defensively minded LD than Zadorov and Ryan Graves looks like he fits the bill + he's cheaper than Zadorov and under contract for another year, but maybe that requires some additional compensation.
