Calgary trades:
Dillon Dube @2.3M RFA 2024
Nikita Zadorov @2.75M (800K retained) UFA 2022

Vancouver trades:
JT Miller @5.25M UFA 2023

Calgary slots Miller in as 2nd line center and brings Connor Mackey up to replace Zadorov.

Vancouver gets a cost controlled versatile young LW/ Center with speed, skill and grit who could use a change of scenery since he's buried on the depth chart in Calgary. It'd free up nearly 3 million in cap space next year too.

I wonder if Vancouver can get a better offer elsewhere, but it does appear the Canucks need to make changes now and you're offering Dube as a potential replacement + a full-time LD which they appear to need as well. Calgary needs a 2nd Line Center and Miller comes with playoff experience and puts up good numbers at a decent salary.

If they don't like Dube for whatever reason, what about offering Monahan at 2.375-3mil retained + Zadorov?

29 Nov 2021 18:33:44
Miller is a 70 point winger. Add at the very least a 1st.

29 Nov 2021 20:58:21
Flames might need to add a bit more to make it go through, but adding a 1st RD Pick to what’s currently being offered would require Vancouver to do up to 50% retention on Miller as well. Dube’s a former 2nd Round Pick and is a cheap controllable asset (RFA) capable of producing 40-65 points if given more playing time and power play minutes. Zadorov is a former 1st Round Pick who make the Top-4 on most teams, including the Canucks, with $800l being retained, adding a 1st would be over payment without retention on Miller too.

29 Nov 2021 21:08:57
@Ebsolutely if he had more term on his contract sure but he doesn't. He's UFA in 2023, only 1.5 years away. If he gets 70 points this year and next he'll be looking for a nice fat raise then.

Could add a 3rd, maybe even a 2nd but you're not getting Dube and a first for what's basically a 1.5 year rental. Might get Gawdin and a first though.

30 Nov 2021 02:43:17
That would be a hard no

30 Nov 2021 16:07:13
Goodrow, Coleman and Palmieri all end up getting a 1st plus, at the deadline, but Miller, who is better than all 3, only gets an underwhelming return in Dube and Zadorov, I don't think so.

30 Nov 2021 17:39:54
@Renidrag Bit of a different situation here. Rumors are there's turmoil in the locker room and they're in last position with arguably enough time to turn things around, so changes need to be made soon.

1st Round Pick's produce players in 1-3+ years, Vancouver needs players now and a young controllable RFA asset in C/ W Dube and a young LD defenseman seem to be pieces they need and can afford now and in the future, but we'll see, maybe they do end up just taking a 1st for Miller or are presented a better offer. Maybe they go after Evander Kane, but I think they need a replacement Center, so maybe Sean Monahan with retention instead? I'm sure we'll find out soon.

@TrevorA

As a long suffering Canucks fan and a long time believer in building your team through the draft, I would rather they take a pick/ s, than try a reclamation project or 2.
Most of the good teams, dating back to the 70's built through the draft, so it isn't a new concept, it is how you should build your team and constantly replenish your prospect pool.

30 Nov 2021 18:50:04
Dube’s value isn’t a 40-65 point player until he actually does it. I think he’s a nice piece for a team to ask for because he’s young with more potential but I don’t think he’ll be the main piece. Zadorov has the value of what a 4th round pick? Over a year and a half of Miller is two cup runs and two years to talk contracts. If he has two more 70 point seasons he’ll get a raise because he’s worth it. Add a first and I think it’s a decent trade.

30 Nov 2021 19:27:24
@Renidrag That's a perfectly fine strategy. So as far as you're concerned the Canucks season is done/ over and they need to tear down and rebuild, so trade your older good players for picks and play to lose for draft position. No Team would openly say they do this, but GM's absolutely field teams, so they can get better draft positions. That absolutely may be the way the Canucks decide to go, but likely with a new GM and Coach in place first.

30 Nov 2021 19:39:40
@Ebsolutely How can they do that if they don't have the same opportunity, ice time and power play minutes to do so!? Flames are not going to play Dube ahead of guys like Tkachuk, Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindholm, backlund and Mangiapane.

Compare Dillon Dube to JT Miller at 22 years of Age:
Dube had 22 points in 51 games (43%) with 13:38 ATOI
Miller had 23 points in 58 games (39.7%) with 12:42 ATOI
I'd say that's pretty equal, based on TOI wouldn't you?

Miller only started scoring more when given more TOI/ opportunity:
15/ 16 43 points in 82 games (52.4%) with 15:02 ATOI
16/ 17 56 points in 82 games (68.3%) with 16:22 ATOI
17/ 18 58 points in 82 games (70%) with 17:01 ATOI
My point being, the more ice and power play time the > the points

To say Dillion Dube can't or is unable to do the same if given the same opportunity just doesn't make sense, it's the progression of the player and the opportunities they're given.

Certainly who they play with helps, but have you ever noticed how players score more in Ottawa, Buffalo or Arizona, but go to another team and don't do so well, it's because they don't get the same ice time and opportunities on teams with better players.

Seriously, give ATOI and whether they're on the Power Play consideration, as Dube is talented enough to be just as good as JT Miller, he just needs the opportunity, which he isn't and seemingly won't get in Calgary, as they're stacked at LW already.

30 Nov 2021 19:41:42
@Ebsolutely Zadorov was traded for a 3rd Round Pick and I don't believe his value has gone down or up, so I would expect it's still a 3rd Round Pick, but defenseman are typically worth more and he is a former 1st Round Pick for what that's worth, he may still have a higher ceiling and potential to play up too given the right role and opportunity.

30 Nov 2021 21:39:36
Mangiapane earned ice time and look at him now. Miller started getting more ice time because he was becoming a better player. Calgary isn’t that stacked that Dube can’t even be on the 2nd PP are they? Getting PP time does make a difference but in most cases if a guy isn’t getting ice time it’s because he hasn’t earned it. Hasn’t Dube been a center most of his career? Calgary isn’t that deep at center. And even if I thought you were right and all he needs to be gifted ice time to be a 60 point player, it still doesn’t mean his value is of a 60 point guy.

30 Nov 2021 23:28:09
You're not wrong @Ebsolutely, they do need to earn more ice time, but Mangiapane is just another guy taking opportunity and time away from Dube and rightfully so, he's played better= >confidence.

@MoxNix pointed out, the Flames have made mistakes in trying to make Center's Right Wingers; they did this with both Sam Bennett and Dillon Dube, since they are stacked at LW, so I propose mixing up the lines, as I do agree with your Center depth remark:

LINE 2: Mangiapane-Dube-Monahan
LINE 3: Lucic-Backlund-Coleman
LINE 4: Richardson-Lewis-Pitlick
OR
LINE 2: Mangiapane-Dube-Ruzicka
LINE 3: Coleman-Backlund-Monahan
LINE 4: Lucic-Richardson-Lewis
OR
LINE 2: Lucic-Dube-Mangiapane
LINE 3: Monahan-Backlund-Coleman
LINE 4: Pitlick-Richardson-Lewis

Nobody has more assists on Mangiapane goals than Dube does this year (4@5x5+2@PP=6), so they should be put back together with either Lucic, Monahan or Ruzicka on the wing. Backlund should be the 3rd Line Center. Monahan is a liability at Center for the moment, so move him to the wing to focus on shooting and play making more and less 2-way defensive play/ responsibility.

I agree Dube for JT Miller straight up isn't fair, but Dube + Zadorov (800k retained) and a 3rd/ 4th Pick or Gawdin might be, but there might be better offers out there for the Canucks too.

01 Dec 2021 00:46:09
Sounds like there’s lot of opportunity for him to work his way into more ice time. Maybe it’ll happen for him this year and if it does maybe your package works by the deadline. But for now Dube is a maybe a 30 point guy and Miller is a 70. Also I have to add to your bad teams = more points thing. Miller has to compete with a top 6 equal to Calgary’s. Petterson, Boeser, Horvat, Garland, Hoglander/ Podkolzin, Miller is pretty stacked.

01 Dec 2021 02:01:52
@Ebsolutely

Vancouver is weak at LW and Dube is a left shot center / winger who's mostly played wing in the NHL. He's better than any LW Vancouver has except Hoglander who is comparable at this time.

Dube has 9 points right now playing mostly in the bottom 6. Boeser has the same point total playing mostly in the top 6. Hoglander and Petterson have 1 and 2 points more respectively, again playing mostly on the top line.

Boeser and Pettersson also have the two worst +/ - on the Canucks. Dube is at 0 +/ -. Not great by any means but still not the worst and he hasn't had much for linemates other than a few games at center with Mangiapane on his LW.

01 Dec 2021 17:43:15
I agree with @MoxNix, Vancouver's roster is weak on the LW.

Dube is fairly equal to Hoglander and Podkolzin who is a RW with same issue as Dube; he's on the 3rd line only getting 12mins.

If Dube received 19-21mins like Petterson and Horvat are at C and Boeser at RW, he'd probably have at least 13-15pts, which is greater than Petterson/ Horvat/ Boeser are all producing.

Your best players are JT Miller at C and Garland on the RW, so I think Dube on the LW is:
= to Hoglander; and
> than Pearson/ Dowling/ Motte/ Dickinson

I would want Dube way before Jake Debrusk as well, as one is on an upward trajectory and the other is on the downward = a gamble.

Evander Kane is greater than both, but is a distraction gamble.
