No thanks.

The only way Calgary would think about Kerfoot for Monahan is if it's without retention on Monahan to save significant cap space.

Calgary has absolutely no need for Nick Ritchie either. The Flames have more left shot LWs than they need as it is now. The last thing they need is yet another left shot LW.

Ritchie was waived. whoever wants him can have him for nothing.

I like and would absolutely do this trade, but would only retain the difference on Monahan's contract of $375k/ yr, anything more and the Leafs would need to compensate CGY with Pick (s) or Prospect (s) for any further retention.

@MoxNix: What's really the difference between taking a gamble on Nick Ritchie vs. Jake DeBrusk? They are both Left Shot LW's and are playing about the same this year. Ritchie is Bigger and Cheaper and just needs a better fit to replicate his production from last year. This move would make Dube expendable for sure, so would be traded separately for the RW we've been talking about all along anyways in Connor Brown, maybe package Dube with Pitlick + a Pick/ Prospect OR Zadorov OR Pick (s) / Prospects with 50% retention on Brown.

Kerfoot is on track to be the player he was in Colorado and any chance CGY can get to dump Monahan without having to pay another Team with a Pick/ Prospect is something I am definitely open too. Kerfoot could take over the 2C Position for now until Backlund can be moved in pursuit for a better 2C, in which Kerfoot would move down to 3C.

Mangiapane-Kerfoot-Dube/ Coleman
Lucic/ N. Ritchie-Backlund-Coleman/ Dube
N. Ritchie/ Lucic-Richardson/ Lewis-Lewis/ B. Ritchie

It's a good proposal @LesHabitants, as something has to give with the Flames to get to the next level.

The difference between Debrusk and Nick Ritchie is DeBrusk isn't slow, fat and out of shape. Debrusk has way more talent, plenty of speed and can score.

If Nick was in the kind of shape his older brother Brett is in and getting paid a similar amount he'd be fine but he's fat, lazy and makes more than twice as much. Hard pass on Nick.

Besides the Leafs put Ritchie on waivers yesterday and he cleared today. Nobody wanted him, not one team in the entire league.

Backlund is bigger and better than Kerfoot. If the Flames recent games vs Vegas, Florida and Tampa Bay proved anything it's that the Flames still aren't quite big enough or tough enough to hang for 60 minutes with the best "heavy" teams.

Kerfoot still has another year left on his contract too. If there are no significant cap savings trading Monahan for him (not even next year) then it makes absolutely no sense to do it.

This Trade isn't the ideal solution, but considering you've been saying it will cost a 1st to move Monahan, this isn't near as bad.

DeBrusk is lazy and isn't playing any better than Ritchie. Maybe Sutter can bring up Pelletier and put Ritchie on a conditioning assignment in Stockton to get him back in better shape, but Kerfoot alone is better than Monahan, since he'll be WAY better Defensively which will go a long way for helping the Flames in itself and there's guys like Dube (till he gets traded for someone better), Coleman and Lucic who can fill in on the #1 PP OR they use Kylington and Andersson + 3 Forwards on one PP Unit and Hanifin + 4 Forwards on the other PP unit.

Backlund is getting older and regressing and shouldn't be getting as much PP time as he is either IMO, whereas Kerfoot is 27 and hitting his prime, so should be able to produce 15-20+ goals and help the Wingers offensively far more than Backlund who is a 3C at this point. Kerfoot's offensive stats are better than both Monahan and Backlund's this year proof and he's a +18. The size difference between Kerfoot, Monahan and Backlund isn't that much and it's really how you use it ; ) . Finally, $3.5mil is far more appropriate for a 3C than 5.25mil is as well.

Even if Ritchie doesn't work and has to be buried, his hit will only be $1.375 + Kerfoot's $3.5 + 375k retained = $5.25, which is $1.125 less what we're paying Monahan now and we'll still have a player in Kerfoot who isn't a liability and we can actually use.

In any event, we don't have to agree on everything, this is just my view.

@seabass, you can't always just claim anybody off of waivers, they still need the Cap Room available to do so, so moving a bad contract for another bad contract, trading away or waiving player (s) is the only way they can pick a guy up off waivers when they are already pretty much at the Cap.

The Flames may have accumulated some Cap Savings along the way this season, but they don't want to just blow it. The only way I would even be considering Ritchie is because it moves out Monahan and brings back a better, healthier more defensively minded Centre in return. I honestly don't even see Toronto wanting to do this trade even though they want to dump Ritchie's contract at this point.

@TrevorA. thanks for the clarification.

"I honestly don't even see Toronto wanting to do this trade even though they want to dump Ritchie's contract at this point. "

That I agree with!

I always aim to please @MoxNix! Now let's pursue Lawson Crouse instead, he would be a much better option than gambling on DeBrusk, it just means moving Coleman to the RW, which shouldn't be a problem.

I'd consider Kerfoot and Engvall for Monahan with 1.5M retention on Monahan. Or Kerfoot and Holl with 500K less retention.

Kerfoot and Holl are UFA in 2023 just like Monahan is. Envall is RFA at the end of this season and has the lowest cap hit of the three Toronto players.

I doubt Toronto would do it though. They'd have to really believe Monahan would bounce back with them and soon.
