Calgary can't afford to wait any longer for Monahan to find his game again. Some of the bottom ranked teams with plenty of cap space might be willing to take him on as a reclamation project.

Calgary trades:
Sean Monahan @6.375M UFA 2023

to a team like Buffalo, Columbus, Seattle, etc. for a second round draft pick

Yes it's selling low but Calgary gets an early second round draft pick and more importantly they get Monahan's cap space back.

Problem is Picks and Cap Space Don't Put Points On The Board. So Yes, Monahan should be moved, but something has to come back to replace his scoring. You didn't propose how you would replace him on the roster either.

Pitlick and Ritchie are the 1st guys to get Sat, Traded or Waived, because they haven't put up anything. Obviously Trades need to happen, but they also have Pelletier, Gawdin, Ruzicka and Phillips they could insert in to the lineup:

Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Pelletier/ Mangiapane-Monahan-Mangiapane/ Phillips
Coleman-Backlund-Lewis
Lucic-Gawdin/ Ruzicka-Dube

Gawdin and Ruzicka have got to be better than Richardson (still injured) and Lewis is playing better than Ritchie and Pitlick and is needed on the PK. Phillips and Gawdin were 120+ Point Top Scorers in the WHL, they just need a better role and some talent to play with. I'm convinced it's mainly Pelletier that's making everyone better in Stockton. Lots of players 20 and under doing well in the NHL too: Jack Hughes, Trevor Zegras, Lucas Raymond, Anton Lundell, Dawson Mercer, Tim Stutzle and Dylan Cousins to name a few and they're not all big guys either. Calgary has Talented Prospects, they just need to start inserting them in to the line-up and using it and spreading it out. Sutter's just too reliant on the old guys.

Don't need a player in return. They'll have $6.375 million more cap space and another second round pick to shop for a replacement with.

As for replacing him, he has 6 points and just 2 goals at 5on5. The other 10 points are all on the powerplay.

An immediate replacement would be Ruzicka, Dueher or even Gawdin in the lineup, Ruzicka, Dube or Gawdin positionally. And go shopping with $6.375 mil more cap and another second round pick on top of the cap space and the picks/ prospects/ players they already have.

Well I wouldn't do it just for the sake of doing it. I would want to make sure we have somebody else coming in at the same time.

Should still be able to package Monahan in a Trade to Seattle for Giordano or McCann or Columbus for Bjorkstrand, Domi, Gavrikov or Jake Bean or Buffalo for Peyton Krebs, Robert Hagg or Mattias Samuelsson.

But yes, we do have a couple Centre's who should be able to replace Monahan's low production at 5on5 and they're worth a try.

In the meantime, sit/ rest Monahan and put Pelletier at LW with Dube and Mangiapane. I'd be interested in seeing Phillips on the RW with Mang on the LW as well, but he's not waivers exempt and
neither is Gawdin. I'd make the 4th Line a Defensive Hard Hitting Wear Down Chequing Line Centered by Ruzicka with Lucic or Coleman on the LW and Lewis, Ritchie. on the RW. If they dump or waive Pitlick, then they can bring up Gawdin and if they waive Ritchie they can bring up Duehr.

Monahan must be reading this he scored two goals last night.

Right lol. Good for him. Part of me wants to wait and see if he can turn things around still, but realistically we should probably move on from him regardless at this point. Hopefully he increases his value 🤞.
