I know Wheeler's contract is extremely hard to trade. But Anaheim will be able to afford it with Getzlaf and Kesler coming off the books. Maybe Wheeler could help there offence as they rebuild.
Why would Wheeler say yes to this. It's Anaheim, California. 🤔 I'm sure his wife and family would be very interested.
Sam Steel needs a re-start. So a move I think would benefit him. Aston-Reese is good defensive player. Penalty killer.

Aston-Reese is a pending UFA and can be signed by Winnipeg this summer if they want to pursue him.

As for Sam Steel, what would Anaheim benefit from trading a 24 year old player they drafted and developed for 6 years in exchange for a 36 year old Blake Wheeler with 2 seasons left at $8m+?

Rather than explaining why Wheeler agrees to be moved to Anaheim, can you explain why Anaheim would want to do this trade?

If you're thinking of a trade where a team with cap space would take Wheeler off of Winnipegs books, I'd consider Ottawa. They're rumored to be looking to speed up their rebuild and start contending and when I look at their RW depth I believe Wheeler would make a good fit in their top 6 and Ottawa can absorb the cap hit without any retention.

I would think there is almost zero chance the Jets would look at a rental as the main piece in exchange for Scheifele. Plus the overall skill level difference between Horvat and Scheifele would make the add from Vancouver too large to be palatable for them. Then you also have to factor in that Scheifele isn't waiving for Vancouver.

Wheeler isn't waiving for Anaheim and isn't a Wheeler away from doing anything.

Scheifele for Horvat makes sense but no way Anaheim takes Wheeler.

Before the Jets fans get all up in arms, Horvat is a good second line center who is 2 years younger, has grit and works hard. More importantly he's a team player not a me player and someone they'll be able to resign for less than Scheifele is going to demand.

Maybe Vancouver adds a little something but it wouldn't take all that much more.

The real question is would Vancouver want a me first guy like Scheifele who probably won't resign with them in two years unless they overpay him bigtime.

Maybe Pierre-Luc Dubois for Tyler Myers would work.

@Renidrag If PLD is made available there'd be a lot more interest in him. He'd fetch a better return too.

Boston, Calgary, Montreal of course and plenty of other teams would be bidding on PLD.
