Calgary Trades C-Sean Monahan + D-Jusso Valimaki + LD-Jeremie Poirier + Michigan Prospect C-Josh Nodler to Detroit for C-Michael Rasmussen and C-Joseph Veleno.

CGY clears $6.375 in Cap Space by moving Monahan while DET gets Veteran Leadership + a couple Prospects for taking on his contract + A Good Sized D-Man with 1-4D Potential in Valimaki who they can insert in the lineup right away. CGY plays Veleno in the AHL to start the season to learn their system and further develop.

I would also offer the above CGY package to CLB for C-Sean Kuraly + D-Jake Bean. Time to move on from Monahan and Valimaki and bring Bean back to Calgary. Would save Calgary $3mil in Cap Space and fills 2 positions. Play Bean with Tanev and Trade Kylington to free up another $2.5mil for Free Agents.

Dude it wouldn’t take a massive haul to get rid of Monahan, insiders have already said that Monahan has multiple takers. He’s not useless, he just had surgery. I’m expecting a bounce back year. You’re acting like he’s going to be placed on LTIR. Monahan at a retained salary to a contender has value

Really bad for calgary. Valimaki is great.

21-22 was supposed to be Monahan’s bounce back season. His $6.375mil could be used elsewhere. Rasmussen and Veleno are 1st Rounders with Size, Grit and Good FO% who might excel on a better team.

Bean > Valimaki, especially defensively and in his own zone + he’ll be super comfortable in Calgary. Kuraly is an excellent 3rd/ 4th Centre with Size, Tons of Hitting and can score. Might be an over payment on the Columbus deal, but Monahan and Valimaki’s values have to be down and I’ve heard Poirier’s Defence is suspect, not to mention we have decent depth at LD already.

Valimaki had his chance. He’s entitled and not a team player. I wish him luck on his next team, Mackey deserves playing time more. If Monny and Maki stay in CGY and do well, I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong, but I think it’s time to switch things up and move on.

@NotaCasual said the same thing last year about Monahan. How was his bounce back year. your seriously blinded by bias my dude.

There are a couple wild cards in this proposal.

Sean Monahan - if he does bounce back then it's a huge win for Detroit in any case. If he doesn't then it depends on the other wildcard.

Michael Rasmussen - Not sure how much potential he has or what his upside is. His minor/ junior stats weren't great but there must be a reason besides size (6'6' 210) why Detroit used a 9th OA pick to draft him.

If Rasmussen is just a bottom 6 forward then it's an overpay for Calgary even if Monahan is terrible next year. If Rasmussen can be a good middle 6 then it's a bit of an overpay but if he can be a 2nd line center it's fine.

Calgary had a good year all things considered. Wouldn't change much but add a few players to fill some holes and sure things up a bit.

Which Teams would be interested in Monahan and what would be the return!? I'd like his $6.375mil to fill other needs.

In 80GP Rasmussen, Scored 15 Even Strength Goals, Won 410 Faceoffs (50.1%), Threw 142 Hits, Blocked 65 Shots and Killed Penalties. He just turned 23 and is signed till 2024 at only $1.46mil. He could likely be the future Backlund replacement. At 22.5 years old, in 66GP, Veleno won 222 Faceoffs (48.3%) and Threw 123 Hits. It takes him a bit to get comfortable with a Team, but he has proven he can score. I imagine they would both do much better on a better team and would be great and tougher competition for Ruzicka and Zary if he can turn his play around.

Kuraly is a Beast, in 77GP he Threw 240 Hits, Won 628 Faceoffs (49.4%) and Scored 14 Even Strength Goals. He's also a #1 Power Killing Centre. He's signed at a reasonable $2.5mil till 2025.

Former 13th Overall Pick Jake Bean is a born and raised Calgarian and was a Star for our Hitmen. He's a bit undersized, but can do it all. Similar to Hanifin, he's not overly physical, but he plays Smart, Calm and Composed. He'll Kill Penalties, Block Shots and QB the Power Play. He's been a 0.80-1.00PPG D-Man before and could be again someday soon. He just turned 24 and is signed for 2 more years at 2.33mil. I think he'd be better than Kylington and for sure Valimaki and Mackey.

Aside from Kuraly, these guys are Young and Fast. The Flames were barely able to compete come playoff time, so although I enjoy winning in the Regular Season, Winning in the Playoffs and being awarded the Stanley Cup is the end goal here.

Dube/ Veleno-Backlund-Coleman
Dube/ Veleno-Rasmussen/ Kuraly- (? / Lewis/ Duehr)

Bean/ Kylington-Tanev

Still interested in Signing Stastny and Trading Dube and Kylington to NJD for Zacha and Graves

Pelletier-Stastny/ Ruzicka-Mangiapane
Zacha-Backlund-Coleman
Veleno-Rasmussen- (Jarnkrok/ M. Phillips/ Lewis/ Duehr)

Graves- (Gudbranson/ Schenn/ Stone/? )

15 Jun 2022 19:50:30
They should convert Michael Stone to a RD/ RW and play him at 4RW.

15 Jun 2022 20:56:05
@hockeydad ah yes because I knew he’d need hip surgery again and be playing on the fourth line with Lewis and Lucic. Doesn’t take a genius to figure it out bud, use your brain.

16 Jun 2022 14:13:11
So injury prone and about the same caliber player as Lewis and Lucic. Clearly worth a similar cap hit to MacKinnon….

16 Jun 2022 18:59:32
Use your head for something besides pounding nails for once.

Monahan has just one year left on his contract. Lots of teams are interested in him. Of course they aren't going to pay a whole lot for him now but he's still far from worthless. Treliving just needs to accept less in return than he's been holding out for.

It's a low risk gamble with high reward potential for the team that takes him. If he rebounds all or most of the way he's well worth his cap hit. If only rebounds partway he can be resigned for less and could still rebound further. If he has another year like last year then they either let him walk or resign him for close to league minimum.

17 Jun 2022 15:59:37
I struggle to see the logic Moxnix.

Kerfoot- a guy you hate so much, is the same age as Monahan, plays the same role 3/ 4C and is on the same caliber of team (playoff contenders), yet has put up double the points, provides much better défense and makes half the salary.

18 Jun 2022 06:06:15
I don't hate Kerfoot but he's overpaid for a soft, non physical bottom 6 forward who never had been and never will be a top 6 player far less a first line center.

Monahan has been a first line center for many years before. Injuries have hobbled him for the last few years. If he's finally healthy again he still has plenty of potential to rebound and be a far better player than Kerfoot again.

If you can't understand that I don't know what to say.
