EDM: Puljujärvi, 2nd ('23)

CLB: Conditional 5th ('23)

EDM would ideally like to include JP in a broader deal to reduce the cost of off-loading this former asset.

BUT...

JP is a pure cap-dump at this point, and the only team I think could talk him into returning to the NHL next year in lieu of Europe might be CLB and their Finnish GM with his Finnish pal Laine.

CLB would send back a conditional 5th ('23), but if they can re-sign JP, it becomes a 3rd-rounder to EDM.

EDM needs help with their cap & roster, and none of that help is going to be pain-free. They'll be an interesting team to watch at the deadline. If they do nothing, they squander yet another year of Connor & Leon's primes. If they overpay, they STILL might squander the year, BUT...they might get further in the playoffs.

Regardless, EDM will be an interesting team to watch.

I think this is a decent trade. Edmonton clears cap space for some more for but at a price, CLB gains a 2nd and a low risk piece with Puljujarvi who MIGHT be able to turn things around in a new environment. Getting rid of cap dumps for teams that are cap-strapped will probably be costly, there's like 3 or 4 teams that hoard all the league's cap space

You think you know enough to say there’s likely only one team from keeping Puljujarvi from going to Europe? Waivers are a hard think to predict but I’d bet he would get picked up for no cost on waivers.

Honestly I think Pulijujarvi would be worth taking a shot on for free.

EBS - Pullijarvi has openly questioned whether the NHL is the league for him. His production has declined greatly this year. The kid is talented, but it’s all what’s between the ears.

Sounds like he wants to go back to Europe. That’s why my guess is the Jarmo can talk him into staying in the league next year and beyond. I have no doubt teams would commit to him to some degree, but whether he wants to stay or go home is the question. My guess is that he chooses to play in Europe next year,

He has no confidence right now and he’s not getting any help getting it back IMO. He was probably a mix of being self deprecating and being too honest with the media. He needs a fresh start with a new team and I have no doubts he can make it in the NHL. It would be a mistake for him to not give it a go for another couple seasons.

EBS - I tend to agree with everything you said.

He has the size and talent, but between the ears he is a troubled young man. He started off on the wrong foot with that ridiculous trade demand and the wasted time it, and put him in the position that team mates and fans wanted to understand if he’s worth all the trouble.

I think Jarmo is the guy to help him figure it out, if indeed he can. You’d need the right supports in place to help him, and I think the Finns in COB would have the best shot at figuring him out.

I agree I think a Finn teammate would be huge. I don’t think there was every a trade demand. Who really knows but I feel like at most his agent told the team he’d be open to a trade.

EBS - JP demanded a trade at least twice out of EDM, including most recently in June ‘22.

I think you guys overestimate the impact of having teamates from the same country. I can’t stand half the people in my own country.

20 Jan 2023 23:38:50
Says you and maybe some hack media. And vb it’s a lot different being in a country that isn’t your native language. Way harder mentally.

21 Jan 2023 00:52:20
EBS - I hate to repeat myself, but you said it man! There’s nothing like being a stranger in a strange land to feel like you don’t fit. It’s hard to follow your bliss or be your best when you don’t have the basic human stuff taken care of.

VB: Put yourself on the other side of the world and you’d be pretty happy to have someone speak the same language as you, or share some of the same life experience. I know you probably have zero idea what I mean, so I’ll just say that the half of the people in your country that you can’t stand are probably okay with that. You seem like one sad, angry dude. I hope something happens today that makes you happy, whatever that may be. ?.

There is no need to trade a pick away with JP unless it's to get a player that can help now back. He can be put on waivers and will get picked up costing no assets if they want to make cap room.
