EDM:

- 2025 2nd
- 2026 1st
- Kulak

MTL:

- Carey Price contract (2 years left @ 10.5M)

. EDM gets 2 years of major LTIR space to help with the last year of the James Neal buyout plus the first two years of the Campbell buyout. (3.016M this coming season, and 2.3M next season.)

. EDM sheds the final two years of Kulak to become cap compliant before the new season, with a chance to upgrade via trade with the extra cap space.)

. MTL absorbs the Kulak deal with an eye on flipping him for a pick or prospect before camp.

. MTL doesn't require the Price contract's LTIR space at this point in their rebuild, and turns it into assets for the future.

. Price has already said he's cool with MTL flipping his contract for assets if required.

. If EDM doesn't want to pay the price, a team like VGK, VCR or FLA will be tempted.

Montreal would be the scummiest team to trade LTIR for assets. On top of the disservice it does to Price.

CROZIER: not sure how closely you follow hockey, but MTL would hardly be the first team to trade an LTIR contract. A few off the top of my head would include Zetterberg, Pronger and Datsyuk.

Chris Pronger even made a joke about his HHOF induction saying that he might go in as a Coyote?

As for Price, he’s already said he’d be cool with it, which I already mentioned. Here’s his exact quote:

“Everybody here knows hockey is a business, and money management and cap space is part of that, ” Price said. “I’m going to be a Montreal Canadien for the rest of my life and I’m very proud of that. I’m willing to help this team in any aspect, whatever the team has to do. If they have to move money to make this team better, I’m here to help in any way I can. ”.

This trade only saves the oilers the 2.75M of Kulaks contract. Being over the cap from LTIR isn’t a benefit to teams, it makes it so you don’t accumulate cap space throughout the season. Easy no from Oil.

I like the idea of this Chickenfoot.

EBS: trading a contract like Kulak would let EDM start the season compliant, and therefore max out the LTIR benefit in-season and acquire additional salary as they will likely want to do.

Here’s a link to the TAM-DET trade of Zetterberg’s LTIR cap hit that is helpful in understanding the very real cap benefits for EDM.

A 1st and 2nd is a steep price, but one a Cup contender like EDM would definitely consider very worthwhile, especially given the combined buyout cap hits of Neal & Cambell in this crucial upcoming season.

This trade would take the Oil from say 88.75M down to 86M. And now have 10M on LTIR making it harder for them to accrue cap space and add at the deadline. They’d only lose 2.75M in salary counting towards the cap. They don’t gain 10M from Price. There is no chance they’d trade a 1st and 2nd to dump Kulak. Kulak isn’t a bad contract.
