Highly doubt TO is willing to keep 1.5 million + take on Weiss and Kindl.

Coburn and Petry trades have really upped the price for Phaneuf.

^ They have to retain or take on a bad contract in return because nobody is ready to take on Phaneuf's albatross of a contract. They have enough cap space to do it with the Clarkson trade.

I disagree. They likely have to do either/or. Unless the contract is a soon(er) to be expiring contract.

The reason why this is topical today is bc Detroit doesn't have enough cap space to bring in a $1 million d-man, let alone Phaneuf at $5.5-$7 million.

In the summer, they can likely make a better move where they aren't keeping $ + taking back $ and Term.

Leafs don't need to rush in order to trade phaneuf, They can just do it in the offseason.

I think the leafs can get some decent value in a phaneuf trade if they wait until offseason when teams have money to spend.
If the leafs retain salary in the trade or take back a bad contract it will be so that they get more for him.
Phaneuf is slightly overpaid, should have never been made captain, and he doesn't keep Elisha happy according to tsn but once he plays on another team he will be appreciated again.
Just my opinion but he's one of the best open ice hitters I've ever seen and how many dmen have scored as many goals as him before age 30
