Flyers: Sam Gagner

Canadiens: Lars Eller

Flyers need a "third" line center with Laughton struggling this year and they are also reluctant to give Gagner a roster spot since returning from injury and despite playing well early in the season. Canadiens also need help on the right wing and Gagner is capable of playing that role. Both players are still only 26 years old, Canadiens gain $300K in cap room.

Habs pass, this doesn't help them at all. while Eller is best suited as a third line shutdown and PK forward, Gagner isn't even worth dressing.

Eller isn't exactly lighting it up this year, but would be consider more valuable than ganger. IMO If this deal where to happen, than the Flyers would have to add a pick, probably a 3rd

That being said, the Flyers putting Gagner in the minors was a weird move.
5 pts in 18 games is nothing special, and with his cap hit of 3.2M for this season I understand trying to clear cap space, but the Flyers still have Umberger on the roster who has only produced like 5 or 6 pts in 20 odd games. With his cap hit of 4.6M, would've made more sense to put Umberger on waivers. Hopefully he's involved in the next trade.

Realistic, good idea.

Vagner was just waived was he not? So why would Montreal give some thing for him?

Draft McDavid

It's because no one wanted to take his full salary. In this case they are moving a contract to get Gagner. It wouldn't make sense if it was a draft pick but when it's a one for one swap it makes more sense. It's why Khdobin and MacDonald cleared waivers this year, not bad players just no one wanted to take their contract and teams are calling Anaheim about Khudobin.

Umberger couldn't be placed on waivers because he has a no movement clause. Laughton could've but wouldn't have cleared enough cap space. So the only option was Gagner. I think it's even considering the past two seasons and how each player performed. The Flyers just don't need another winger at this point in time.

Eller will still perform in playoffs, if they make it. Why would u want to get a smaller player in return.

If that's the reason why Umberger is still on the Flyers, then they're screwed.
He most likely can't even be traded.

Out of all the moves Hextall made, Hartnell for Umberger and a 4th is the most questionable. Very little difference in cap for a very big difference in quality of players. I'm sure it served a purpose, and every other trade Hextall made has been a home run IMO.

That is the reason he's still in Philly. Whether it's a full no movement I'm not sure. And I completely agree, I hated that trade. Hextall said it was for cap reasons, but it only gave Philly about $125K in space and his contract expires a year earlier, but Hartnell produced much more than RJ. I wish that trade and the JVR trade could be erased from memory.
