Columbus Trades
Hartnell
3rd Round Pick 2017

Toronto Trades
Soshnikov

Opens up enough Cap Space for Columbus to trade for a Centre or DMan or both at the deadline and trading off Hartnell for Soshnikov adds to there young core of forwards.

For the Leafs they have enough prospect depth to make a trade like this and having a Vet like Hartnell play on a line with Matthews and Brown only helps those 2 young players and adding a 3rd Rounder keeps with there rebuilding plan.

For different reasons this is a good trade for both Teams.

Thoughts?

This doesn't make any sense whatsoever for Toronto

Only way TO takes on Hartnells contract is if a good young player is coming back.

Hartnell is still a productive Winger so the 3rd Rounder is the Young Player coming back.
It does make sense because having only young players doesn't work either long term.
How many years did Edmonton try that before and it got them nowhere.
They sign Lucic this year because you need vets on the team too and Hartnell is a perfect fit on the Leafs.

this trade does not make sense despite what you are saying, the leafs do not need to win now, you don't trade a guy that has top 6 potential for an aging vet who has two more years at almost 5 mil a year. Don't compare the leafs to the oilers, this is year two of the rebuild maybe year 3 or 4 would be nice to have a guy like that but not now. The leafs are leaps and bounds ahead of the oilers at the same time frame of their rebuilds.
