You get paid more in ufa years. I don't know the exact numbers off my head but a couple ufa years are 11m/year for actual salary

think long term, 9 mil now may equate to the value of 6 million dollar player 5 years from now.

Arbitration was for 1/2 year(s)
9 mil is his long term commitment price.

Because the arbitrator amount was based on a 1 year deal his new contract is for the next 8 years. so montreal was prepared to give him a little more money to sign him long term. in 5 years with the cap going up and the crazy contracts being handed out this year this could still be a steal for the habs. if it had gone to the arbitrator subban would have gotten a 1 year deal between 7 and 8mil. then they would of had to negotiate a contract again next season. its better for everyone that they just do the 8 year deal now and get it over with. if they didn't and subban has a good year this season he probably gets 10 or 11 mil next year.
