Why would Carolina retain money on a contract that has 3 years left? And Gardiner ain’t that bad of a player. There’s better ways of acquiring a 3rd line Center.

Lots of teams retain salary on multi year term deals. It's not uncommon. If they want to dump Gardiner bad enough to free up roster spot for Bean, then they make the deal. By the time Bean needs an extension, Gardiner will be just coming off the books.
