Oilers 2021 - 2022
Resign RNH to $6.5 m x 6
Resign Kahun to $2 m x 2
Resign Yam to $3 m x 2
Sign Bear to $4 m x 4 if he repeats the performance as last season.
Resign Cogliano to $2 m x 2. If not him, then resign Ennis for $1.5 m x 1
Sign Saad or Shwartz to $4 x 3 - both a lot of experience and can score.
Sign Getzlaf to $2.5 m x 2 (my 1st choice) . If not him, Bozak, E. Stall, Bonino. many good choices!
Sign Savard $4 m x 2. If not him, resign Barry or Larson.
Sign Raanta to $4 m x 1 - 1 year due to history of injuries. There are other choices too.

To Seattle: expose Klefbom (if healthy of course) as long as Krakens take Neal.

Saad - McDavid - Puljujarvi ($18 m)
RNH - Drai - Yam ($18 m)
Cogs - Getzlaf- Kassian ($ 8 m)
kahun - Turris - Archibald ($5 m)

Broberg - Savard ($5 m)
Jones - Bouchard ($1.5)
Russel ($1.5 m)

I think RNH gets more tbh. Like maybe a 7.25 @ 6yr, depending on his performance this upcoming season. Saad will get more than 4mil,

A lot of thought went in to thisI just feel a lot of the values are off to make this possible.

I believe RNH probably gets a bit more, but that’s not too bad.

Small sample size but Yamamoto was point per game. If his numbers stay anything remotely close to that, he’s not taking 2x$3M. Look at other RFA forwards the last 2 off seasons. He well aware of the position he’s in.

Saad/ Schwartz will have a lot of suitors and I don’t believe either need to take a 30-35% pay cut from what they’re making now to play for Edmonton.

Lastly I also think Seattle will want more than just leaving Klefbom exposed to have them take Neal. Other teams will pay a lot more than that to use their cap space as a dumping ground during flat cap era. Klefbom is a decent player, but he will be 28, 8 seasons in and has only been fully healthy for 1 of those years, topping out at 38pts. They will want a good prospect or picks. Spending over 12% of their cap on Klefbom and Neal doesn’t help them in anyway.

Everything here makes a lot of sense for EdM but doesn’t seem to take into account the players or other teams leverage.

Now, some of you are forgetting the fact that we are in the era of C.V.. No player is getting want they want on the open market. Look at the many examples: Hall, Toffoli, Barrie. Offering Saad $4m to $4.5 m for 2 years is reasonable because after this signing he is young enough to sign another one.
RNH will not get more than $6.5m to $7m. I doubt that.
Now, offering Seattle Klefbom, a #2 defenceman at the price of $4m is pretty enticing. My comment also said if he is healthy! Neal would have 2 years left only. He would be good in the locker room and on the PP.

I get your point but Hall and Barrie knew that the money wasn’t going to be there this offseason so they took one year deals in a hope there’s more financial stability next offseason to hit it big. That’s different than asking players that will be sought after to take 65% of their wage for a 3 year term, in their late 20s which are prime earning years. Very different situation.

Also, can’t have it both ways. You don’t get to say “good players will take less because the financial constraints” AND “we will dump an albatross of a bad contract on someone else without paying an insane premium”. I

f you can get 28 yr old Jaden Schwartz for $4M, so can other teams. Why would a team like Seattle not do that, instead of taking 34 yr old Neal from you at $5.75M?!

Both those things don’t make sense in the same market and financial atmosphere. That’s all i'm saying.

No way Getzlaf signs for 2.5x2. Schwartz will get more. I think your close with RNH. Also 750k on Lucic retention.

@Ebsolutely ya, I don’t think Getzlaf is at the point where he will play for that.

I know Holland is a good GM, But to think Ron Francis is going to spend 12% of his cap on Klefbom and James Neal to make it possible for Edmonton to sign Schwartz, Getzlaf AND Savard for 12% of their cap is laughable.

Schwartz seemed like a big underpayment at first but Toffoli just signed for 4.25M x 4. So I could maybe see Schwartz get slightly more money. 5M x 4 instead?

Klefbom is worth every penny he makes so if they have the opportunity to get him I’m sure they’d be all over it. Obviously his injury history is bad and I’m not sure how it effects his value. Neal will only have two years left on his contract, if the Oil retained say a million it wouldn’t be all that bad to take on. Although the free agency pool is going to be super deep for Seattle so they might want to avoid taking on cap. Hard to gauge that type of trade.

Yeah. I don’t think Neal is something they want to get involved in.

Vegas got William Karlsson, a 1st round pick and a 3rd to take David Clarksons contract and they never had to actually pay it, it was insured, just hold his cap hit.

They got Jon Marchessault to take Rielly Smiths $5M Contract and they’ve both been 70pt players for them.

They got Shea Theadore to take Clayton Stoner over a better Dman in ANA

And this was all before a flat cap where more teams are in a cap crunch and owners are pressuring GMs to cut payrolls.

I never said Klefbom isn’t a good player or is overpaid at just over $4M, he’s not at all. I’m saying he’s not enough of a sweetener to shed James Neal. You would be getting 2 years of a 28yr old injury ridden top 4 Dman, to eat 2 years of a terrible contract. They would want cheaper, more controllable assets (top prospects/ picks like Theadore was) than a guy who can’t stay in a lineup and will be gone by the time the team should compete.
