Calgary is shopping Hanifin, a better LD than Bean. Bean isn't a top 4 and the Flames already have plenty of depth at LD. I just don't see them bringing in another LD unless it's a top 4 replacement for Hanifin and they have a trade moving him out.

Not sure why. This is just a hunch, but it could be they have a deal in the works for another player and need to move about 4 mil in cap space first.

Also management is really big on Valimaki, maybe think he's ready (or nearly ready) to fill a spot in the top 4 now.

Could be both too.

To me Hanifin is a guy who solidifies any top 4 in the nhl. I wouldn’t trade him unless he wanted to leave.

@ToffoliTB I mostly agree, but it all depends on what the Flames wind up getting in return. Could be another team and other players involved too. Trading Hanifin to one team and then making another trade with another team to bring in a top 6 RW for example.

I'd be perfectly happy if the Flames keep Hanifin but I'd be even happier if they had a proven 1st line RW, especially one that plays a physical game.

They’re shopping Hanafin because they need a top 4 RD more than they need Hanafin.
They are dealing from a position of strength.

@jaymostep it’s just so confusing. If Treliving were to do that then it just opens up another hole on the LD.

Like it’s stupid if the defensemen he gets back from a Hanifin trade is better than Tanev then we’re paying Tanev 4.5 mil to man the 3rd Pairing. And if we trade Hanifin right now then it could end up like the Hamilton situation. Hamilton is known as a top 10 defensemen in the league. It’s just stupid, if Tre does trade Hanifin it should be for Carlo. Fills both needs and Hanifin is also from the area

Treliving is always trying to put together some crazy sequence of deals that never comes together.

Maybe not at the start of the year but I think the team plans on the top pairings being:

Giordano Andersson
Valimaki Tanev

by the end of the year. Regardless of whether Hanifin stays or not.

Or maybe they'll put Valimaki with Andersson and Gio with Tanev instead.

Either way if that's what the team is planning on it makes Hanifin an expensive 3rd pairing D.
