With Chicago trading Hagel earlier this year and now Debrincat and Dach too Patrick Kane should be more than ready to waive his NMC now.

Chicago trades:
Patrick Kane @5.25M (50% retained) UFA 2023

Calgary trades:
Tyler Toffoli @4.25M UFA 2024 or Sean Monahan @4.78125M (25% retained) UFA 2023
Connor Zary @894K RFA 2024
2023 first round pick

Calgary gets a replacement for Gaudreau (assuming he walks) . If Chicago takes Monahan at his full cap hit Calgary could add a sweetener or take less retention on Kane.

Chicago gets a good prospect, a first round pick and either a pretty good winger or if they're willing to gamble a bit a center who if he's finally 100% healthy again could be worth a lot as a deadline rental.

He’ll No. That’s too much

Maybe Monahan + 1st RD Pick/ or Zary + a Mid-Pick/ Prospect for 25-33% retention on Kane, but it wouldn’t be needed if they took Monahan back at his $6.375 and Gaudreau walks.

At the end of the day Kane is a 34 year old rental who’s play is on the decline. If CHI can get better offer, go ahead, otherwise a 1st + mid-Pick/ Prospect should get you a young RFA you can sign long term like LA did with Fiala.

Kane just had 92 points in 78 games. what decline are you talking about? Lmao. Absolute clown.

I didn't say he wasn't still good, he's just getting old. Other than a few exceptions (Ovechkin), it's common knowledge players start falling off after 34 years old; look at Ryan Getzlaf's last 4 years for example

Kane had 15G/ 56GP = 22G/ 82GP last season and 27G/ 82GP this year, which are his lowest G/ GP stats over the past 10 seasons. He used to be good for 35-45 Goal Per Season.

He's still experienced and smart enough to make plays, hence why his assists and points are still up (having DeBrincat as his linemate helps a lot too), but he's slowing down and just not as good as he once was and will only decline from here. I'd like to have him, but the acquisition price proposed is just too much IMO

Father Time isn't very good to us humans, especially Athletes.

This thread is like it’s written by PINBALL’s western branch office.

Kane is still awesome, and CHI is stripping it down to the boards. They traded a 21 year old centre! Why in the world would they accept a veteran-laden package?

IF they trade Kane, they’ll get a generous package of picks and prospects to rebuild with. They’re clearly preparing for the Bedard sweepstakes.

Veteran laden package?

First round picks and 20 year old prospects are not veterans.

I just realized it was Toffoli OR Monahan lol. Oops, definitely don’t recommend including Toffoli in a package for Kane, but the rest of it sure, but again with no retention, unless it’s Kane.

Toffoli is 30, and Monahan is 27. Monahan is a cap dump whose future is in doubt.

Neither is appropriate in a deal for CHI who are clearly trying to bottom out with a rebuild and lottery shot.

ChickenFoot: I have to point out it was Toffoli OR Monahan, not both and in order for Kane to waive his NMC he may want to go to a contender as opposed to a Bottom Feeder, so CHI may very likely have to take back Salary to make that happen and could always flip them for more assets after.

Yes, Monahan is a Wild Card right now. They’ll either win huge on him or lose a bit. It’s definitely a gamble, but if they’re playing for last, it might be one they’re interested in taking to get a Top Pick + A Prospect.

@Chickenfoot It's not Toffoli AND Monahan, it's one OR the other.

If Chicago is trading away all their best / highest paid players they're going to need a few contracts just to reach the cap floor.

Monahan with only one year left on his contract is perfect for that. If he's bad next year that's ok it helps Chicago's chances in the draft lottery. If he rebounds that's fine too they can flip him to a contender for a good return.

Toffoli is another option if they want a few pretty good (but not too good) players to help bring along all the young players they're going to have in the lineup soon. He has no trade protection and is on a good contract that'll be easy to flip whenever they feel like it too.

In addition it's very unlikely anyone who isn't a contender is going to trade for a high end rental like Kane and even less likely Kane will waive for anyone who isn't a contender (or very close already) . Contenders are all tight against the cap and would have trouble fitting Kane under the cap even with 50% retention. If Chicago wants to maximize the return for him they'll need to be willing to take a contract back.
