Flames get a guy who can hopefully be a full time starter (following in Talbots footsteps), and rangers get a goalie for the future.

Please explain why NYR would take a worse goalie in a 1-1 trade? The probability of Gillies becoming nothing in the NHL is huge. Raanta is a proven good backup maybe even capable of handling a starting job.

NYR would consider because of Gillies very high ceiling. He has potential to be a legit superstar starter. That no the likely hood of losing Raanta to Vegas for nothing at all.
Saying that, CGY says no and should offer less.

I like it. CGY gets a guy who might be a starter. Similar situation to Talbot. NYR get a really great prospect who might be an all right backup next year. Gilles is also expansion proof.
