To NYR: Cody Franson
To TOR: Kevin Klein
Toronto gets a stay at home RHD (from Ontario) on a decent contract to play with Gardiner. NYR gets a powerplay triggerman who they can get while Franson's value at its lowest. Franson is phyiscal and will help New York's mediocre (but not great) powerplay.
-Buyout Gleason
-Resign Gardiner to a bridge deal of 2.9 million x 2 years (identical to Kadri and Bernier)
-Paul Ranger (who was decent last year) for depth and leadership.
Gunnarsson - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Klein
Rielly - Granberg
Ranger
A free roaming puck moving defenseman with a stay at home defenseman allows for balance. Klein and Granberg will stabilize Rielly and Gardiner better than Franson/Gleason/Fraser ever did. Franson is good but had a bad year and doesn't fit in Toronto's system with too many offensive defensemen.
1.) Why would you buy out gleason?! makes zero sense.
2.) Ranger sucks
gunnar's got to go
and the leafs buyouts r done
its going to cost them 1.4m a season over the next 4 years
not worth it
try to package him in a deal
gleason phaneuf 8th overall and leivo
for floridas 1st and jovo
jovo has 1 more year left on contract and might even retire this year and won't count against cap
good trade though franson for klein!
3.) You'd buyout Gleason because he's got a big cap hit, he's slow, he's crap and he is injury prone. That's why.
4.) Gleason plays hard and is a good shut down D. and leafs have no buyouts left that won't count against their cap.
5.) It seems logical from Toronto's perspective but think about what the new york rangers traded to get Kevin klein. They traded Michael Del Zotto, who just like Franson is a good young offensive defenseman. Clearly New york wanted a player with a "Defense first" mindset. The value isn't far off because Franson and Del Zotto are relatively close in value. It just doesn't fit the rangers need.
Sincerly, a leafs fan

Leafs Offseason Plan
To Florida: Dion Phaneuf, Jake Gardiner, Cody Franson 8th Overall
To Toronto: Erik Gudbranson, 1st Overall
Florida (in a win now mode) gets a top pairing defenseman, a dynamic young, puck moving defenseman and another young promising defenseman who is a dangerous powerplay option. They move down seven spots to grab a winger (Ritchie/Virtanen) to play with their young centers.
Toronto moves up seven spots to grab a franchise defenseman in Aaron Ekblad and grabs a young, much needed shut down defenseman.
Sign:
Aaron Ekblad: ELC (worth approx.3 million with rookie bonuses)
Erik Gudbranson: 5 million x 6 years (comparable to Bogosian)
Peter Holland: 2 million x 2 years (bridge deal)
Jerry D'Amigo: 1 million x 3 years
Carter Ashton: 1 million x 1 year
Paul Ranger: 1 million x 1 year
Al Montoya: 1.5 million x 2 years
Brian Boyle: 2 million x 1 year
Ryan Callahan: 6 million x 6 years
Leo Komarov: 2.5 million x 2 years
JVR - Bozak - Kessel
Lupul - Kadri - Callahan
Komarov - Holland - Clarkson
D'Amigo - Boyle - Ashton
Orr
Gunnarsson - Gudbranson
Rielly - Ekblad
Gleason - Granberg
Ranger
Bernier
Montoya
First callups: Broll, Percy
1.) No way. Toronto needs a culture change. A full blown reconstruction of the team. Time for a real team!
2.) I think they could Trade Phaneuf for the 1st straight up with another medium range prospect with some up side. i'm not sure who Toronto would be willing to give away I guess maybe a Jake Gardiner or Tyler Biggs, Matt Finn or something.
3.) Don't want another Clarkson
4.) So, your team is horrible defensively and you think Florida will give up their best d-man and Ekblad for three of those crappy d-men from TO? What dream world are you from?
5.) Theres sth called CAP btw
6.) Agree, total leaf land dream world.
As if FLA is in win now mode! They finally have some money behind them with a GM who always looks long term.
Forget getting rid of that pylon unless you eat 2. 5 to 3. 0 million of that bloated contract.
7.) All three of those crappy defenseman are better than Floridas so amazing defenseman

I think the Leafs would take Virtanen over Ehlers if he's still on the board.
