Leafs need to move Mathews before they lose him for nothing. Hopefully going to zona he will do a sign in trade.

Why would ARI trade for a contract as expensive as Matthews when they’re playing 2 more seasons in a 4500 seat barn?
They won’t be staying in ARI anyway, so there goes the “return home” angle.
Matthews is way more likely to hit the open market as a UFA regardless, and it’s not like he’s such a clutch playoff performer that contenders will be trading the farm for him.

If the Arizona franchise ever has a chance they have to build a team through the draft and develop philosophy.
They shouldn't try and take a short cut by signing one $14 mil per over valued player like Matthews.
It will throw their cap structure out of whack like the Leafs did by signing Tavares.
This led to overpaying the other 3 players with no $ for the rest of the team.
Arizona has to stay the course.

Matthews is a generation player. He is also a very defensively minded player. The only way he gets traded is if can’t be signed.
Larkin is a good player but anything less than getting Bedard is not a good trade.
Leafs need a top six physical winger. Any other trades need to replace a roster player with a better player. For example why trade Holl for McCabe when they bring the same skill set and McCabe has a higher salary?

This is a good trade if Murray stays on LTIR. Otherwise he needs to be moved but I think he has a no trade. To bad Leafs couldn’t come up with enough assets and cap space to add Chykrun? I guess if a third team gets involved in the cap stuff both these are doable but Chykrun would cost Sandin, Hirovan, and another first or Neimela at a minimum. Kerfoot or Engvall would probably have to be involved?

It's not fair for Arizona. They're better off keeping the young cost controlled player and Matthews has no incentive to sign before he becomes a UFA, unless he's staying in Toronto.
If Matthews is intent on going to Arizona, then they just wait and sign him as a UFA. Matthews doesn't do anything for them next year anyways.

Huge overpayment. Bedard could end up being on par or better than Matthews, so why give up Cooley and Chychrun on top of that. Arizona would be better off keeping the younger players.

Kid might be Gretzky 2.0. I haven't seen a kid with that vision since Gretzky. Although fast, not McDavid fast. just a special player. Hes generational. list will go like this.
