NJD hasn't signed Bratt and was hoping for Gaudreau, but Tkachuk would be even Better and they could use some Tough Guy Protection and a Better Scoring LD. CGY gets a haul of Young Forward Prospects and a Veteran Defensemen who are all more likely sign long-term in CGY

Really losing Gaudreau isn't as bad as the media makes it out to be. With the current roster as it stands right now I project the lines being something like this.

Toffoli - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Coleman - Backlund - Mangiapane
Pelletier - Monahan - Dube
Lucic - Ruzicka - Rooney

Not too shabby and that's without any further signings or trades. Maybe Monahan gets replaced by Kadri or Strome. Kadri would definitely bump Backlund down to the 3rd line and Strome might too.

Maybe Lucic retires or gets traded. Toffoli or Dube could be traded opening up a spot for Walker Dueher and getting assets that can be flipped as part of a package a top 6 upgrade. Maybe they can find a way to acquire a player like Lawson Crouse.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Kid Line in Calgary next year either.

Anyhow my point is it isn't like the team is suddenly bad just because little johnny left.

@Trevor If they don't acquire a replacement top 6 forward before the season starts Matthew Phillips might even get a good look. I have no doubt you'd like that.

I Agree they don't instantly suck, but they need a replacement Passer/ Playmaker/ Puck Carrier/ Zone Entrance Guy IMO

Toffoli, Mangiapane & Pelletier could all be tried at 1LW (or yes, Matthew Phillips at RW), but I'd prefer they sign Kadri or Kessel (if cheap like $2-3mil/ yr, similar to Jeff Carter, as he won't give us a Zach Parise or Corey Perry type deal)

A Trade for JT Miller or Patrick Kane or any 1.00PPG+ or Top Assist Player woudl be nice, although Toffoli can put up good numbers & Pelletier & Phillips might seriously surprise ppl. I'm worried about putting Mangiapane there without a Long-Term deal, as that would probably help his value skyrocket.

We definitely need Lucic to take one for the Team and either retire or move-on. We need the Roster Spot, $$$ + more Speed

Value signings would be Paul Stastny or Dylan Strome. Cheap Bottom-6 Role & PK Players could be Johan Larsson, Calle Jarnkrok, Rem Pitlick and Tyler Motte

I'm all for bringing Calgary Born/ Products back, including Former Hitmen like Victor Rask or even better Trade for OTT's Mark Kastelic (Great Size and Work Ethic) . I'd even give Mark Jankowski a PTO. He's got Great Size and was a decent Penalty Killer Scoring 5SHG + 3SHA's in 2018-19 with the Flames. I'd really like Michael Stone back too, but not sure that will happen now that they signed Meloche. I guess we'll just have to wait & see what Tre & Sutter's plans are for the new look Flames.

Bonehead Brad missed out on Strome too. The Capitals just signed him to a 1 year contract for $3.5 million.

Yup, Dylan Strome went to a very affordable $3.5mil

Check out Danton Heinen’s stats on Hockey Reference. He had a great year. Only played 12:43mins/ game and his Takeaway Giveaway ratio was really good. He’d be a good pick up I think. Could score 20 Goals and 0.50PPG on the 3rd Line.

The problem with Heinen is he's yet another left shot LW.

Stastny would be ok if he's cheap enough but as the 4th line center or 3rd line if they trade Backlund which I doubt will happen. Lindholm would stay at 1st line center Kadri would be the new 2nd line center and Backlund would center the 3rd line.

No donut man! I'd rather see Pelletier or Dube get a shot at playing with Lindholm and Tkachuk then Kessel. Pelletier is probably the better playmaker but playing with those two for a while might be exactly what Dube needs to finally start showing more than just occasional flashes of the player he could be. Playing with Mangiapane and Kadri might do it too.

Not going to get into that defense other than to say it would be a downgrade and a pretty big one at that.

Losing Gaudreau doesn't mean flames will suck you are right. but loosing him for NOTHING sucks. I think this is an indicator of a player personal / / / management disconnect.

Same as Vancouver last year. Bonehead Brad will be gone sooner rather than later.

Other than giving some of the Young Guys an opportunity to play to see what we got, I have to disagree with you on these veteran signings, especially since they come at no acquisition cost and other than Kadri would be cheap, but won't last long:

Kadri $7.5-7.8mil = 1.23PPG + Great Playoff Scoring Production
Kessel $2.5-3m = 0.80-1.00PPG Player with Good Line Mates
Subban $2.5-3m = Great RD Value + Physical, Experienced, Nice Shot
Stastny $1.5-2m = Amazing Value, 55% FO%
Del Zotto $1-1.5m = Physical + Offensive @50% Kylington's cost
Heinen $1.25-1.5m = Can Play RW, Scores + Good Defensively
Motte $1-1.25m = Good Energy, Shot & PK Ability

Stastny can split Top-6 time with Monahan, Dube, Ruzicka and Kessel with Pelletier & Phillips and both can sit out games to keep them rested and healthy.

Subban wasn't worth $9mil/ yr, but at that price, he's still a good and exciting RD with size and who can kill penalties.

Heinen (plays RW too) isn't overly Physical but he's responsible and will produce secondary scoring. Motte is more of a Defensive Checking PK Specialist. He's an absolute maniac on the ice, hitting everything he sees, stick checking; an absolute nuisance to play against. Either would replace Lucic

Del Zotto is a great skating bargain LD who is more Physical, Experienced and Skilled than Kylington, Valimaki and Mackey. He can do it all including on the PP & PK if need be

What we need is Tanev back OR we should Trade for Brandon Carlo or Jacob Trouba or even Tyler Myers, Justin Holl, Scott Mayfield or Luke Schenn. BIG Defensive RD's to cover for the more Offensive LD's: Zadorov, Del Zotto, Kylington, Mackey & Valimaki.

Like I said before Kadri would be a good pickup. Stastny too if he's cheap enough.

Kessel and Subban would be huge mistakes.

As for the rest maybe one or two of them might be useful for depth but they aren't upgrades over anyone on the roster now. That's including Trevor Lewis who I didn't list earlier because he hadn't resigned yet.

Del Zotto I didn't realize was on waivers for a buyout but even at half price there's no reason to pick him up. Especially not if he's replacing Kylington OR worse blocking Mackey who is ready for the NHL now and needs to play to find out where his ceiling is.

Forgot to mention.

The thing I like most about Statsny is said some really nice things about Sutter and the Flames not very long ago. Sounded like he wants to sign with them and was angling for an offer.

Kessel just came off an $8mil/ yr contract and Subban $9mil/ yr = $17mil/ yr. To acquire them for 1/ 3 the cost when they can still play and contribute would be decent pickups

Kessel scored 20G in 56GP last season = 29/ 82GP. He had a down year, but if he were to play on a better team with good defense to shelter him, he should rebound and contribute 50-80PTS

Subban would like get back to 0.40-0.50PPG with CGY, has good size, isn't old for a D-Man and would score more than just 1 or 2 Goals for us on the PP

Motte and Heinen were to replace Lucic, not Lewis but injuries happen, so you want as much depth as possible.

Same applies to Del Zotto. He'd be cheap @$1mil/ yr and can compete with Mackey for a Roster Spot and/ or Valimaki to be the 7th D-Man. Worst case scenario you waive & send him down to the minors. He's very little risk AFAIC + He can actually skate and Score on the PP (unlike Kylington who should be Traded while his value is high. He won't replicate what he was able to do last year without Tanev being there to shelter and cover for him)

I've been calling for Stastny since last year's deadline. Looks like TOR picked up Jarnkrok to replace Mikheyev, so he's no longer a RS Bottom-6 option, too bad he didn't work out and take a discount to stay with the Swedish Contingency.

Not sure if Nino Neiderreiter would be any better than Dube, but he's got Better Size and Physicality and might sign for around $2.85mil/ yr.

Neiderreiter would fit right in with the Flames and thrive under Sutter. I thought about getting him many times but he won't come cheap lots of teams will be interested in him. I see it taking at least 3 million a year to get him and it might take more than 4.

With Toronto picking up Jarnkrok with term I bet the dump Kerfoot now.

Neiderreiter LW, Statsny C and Stralman RD works for me.

Neiderreiter probably takes around 4.5 mil/ yr on a 3-6 year contract to sign. A big physical middle 6 forechecking power forward with good speed who can score. Pretty much made to order for Sutter. A line with Backlund or Stastny centering Neiderreiter and Coleman would not be fun to play against.

Stastny and Stralman at their ages would have to be 1 year contracts.
Stastny 1.5 maybe 2 mil. Not sure what Stralman is looking for or what his perceived worth is right now but it'd have to be no more than about 2.5 mil to work for the Flames.
