Calgary trades:
Oliver Kylington
Milan Lucic

Seattle trades:
Carson Soucy
2022 second round pick

The deal goes down after Lucic gets paid his $3 mil bonus this summer.

Calgary gets the 3rd pick in the 2nd round, a big physical defenseman for the 3rd pair and sheds Looch's cap hit in the process.

Seattle gets a dynamic young offensive defenseman plus an enforcer to who only costs them $1 million in actual salary.

Great Trade. Flames open up $5mil in Cap Space + get a 3LD replacement for Zadorov and SEA gets a Young Proven Top-4 D-Man + a Wrecker/ Protector/ Team Leader for only $1mil that they can flip to get a decent pick for down the road with very little “retention”.

Trading away Kylington would be a mistake

@NotACasual Then how would you change it, Valimaki instead of Kylington or something else?

21 Jun 2022 21:41:12
Yeah, Valimaki. I’ve given up on him after he started to show some attitude problems this season. I have no doubt in my mind that he’ll crack the roster but Kylington is fast, smart and just better all around.

Sell high on Kylington, he's small and falls down. Any of Mackey, Valimaki or cheap pick ups like Erik Gustafsson or Michael Del Zotto would be able to replicate Kylington's scoring on the Flames and being partnered with Tanev. Would like more physicality and hitting as well. Kylington is fast and has a good stick check, but he misses the net on shots and has trouble transitioning from forwards to backwards and will cost $2.5mil+/ yr. A Trade for Jakob Chychrun, Ryan Graves and/ or Carson Soucy would be ideal (even if the latter 2 cost $3-4mil/ year to extend) ; they're all Bigger and Better than Kylington and probably Hanifin too for that matter.

In any event, we'll have to dangle a carrot with Lucic, unless we just want a crappy mid-round pick from a bottom floor cap team that won't help us for years or ever at all. Time to win is now.

@NotACasual I don't put much stock in that supposed attitude issue. That's all based on a comment he made in Finnish which was translated to him saying it was silly he's in the AHL.

That was probably just a poor translation. I figure he meant the situation he finds himself in now (being in the AHL when he'd made the team before getting injured) is silly. I doubt he meant Flames management and coaches are silly.

Aside from his entitled attitude, Valimaki hasn’t taken advantage of his opportunities or down well enough when sent back down to Stockton to get back on our radar. Mackey has since surpassed him, so although he’s young and I certainly don’t think he’s a bust, he needs to find a team where he can get the minutes and prove himself. If we have to play him with Tanev to prove he’s still good, let’s do it, but sell both Valimaki and Kylington is my recommendation.

Valimaki reminds me of Erik Brannstrom

Dunno about that Valimaki is big Brannstrom is quite small for a defenseman.
