EDM - Campbell, 2024 1st

ARI - Zucker.

- It will take a 1st and 3rd to dump Campbell.

- Zucker is having a decent season, and ARI is 5 points out of a wildcard.

Zucker is on pace for less than 35 points and he makes over 5M. That offsets some of the cost to dump Campbell.

EBS: Zucker is on an expiring contract, Campbell can’t help a farm team, and you can’t ignore the term left on that deal.

ARI is no longer a dumping ground for bad contracts. I think they take what Zucker has left to fight for a wildcard and go their separate ways at season’s end?.

Arizona might be done taking bad contracts sure and if that’s the case then it’s a no go. But Zucker obviously isn’t having a decent season. Campbell can help a farm team. The rumoured price to dump Campbell is a 1st and 3rd so getting over 5M off the books is reasonable to drop the 3rd. Arizona has a lot of picks in the next couple drafts so maybe there window to be good should really start when Campbells contract is done.

EBS: you still don’t paint a compelling reason why ARI should take on Campbell’s hideous contract. Because their trajectory lines up with when Campbell’s deal is finished is no reason to take it on.

It just doesn’t seem to be a fit for that contract going to that team. It has to help both teams and I just don’t see why ARI considers this.

They have a looooong history of taking bad contracts. They add a 1st to a really important draft for there team. They have a recent history of trading together. I think the Oil should add another future to make it more fair but the incentive is to get future pieces to build a decent team.

30 Jan 2024 10:13:06
ARI certainly does have a looooong history of taking on bad contracts for picks. They’re 5 points out of a wildcard. Those days when you could dump bad contracts on them “are history”, that’s all.

Timeline matches up for sure with when Campbell's contract ends. Idk if what we are seeing from Arizona is a one off year or if this is the new look Coyotes going forward. Would all really depend on if management thinks they are still 3 or so years away from really doing some damage.

30 Jan 2024 13:22:33
Coyotes have lots of prospects and lots of picks, and they should have a bright future ahead of them. somewhere other than ARI.

If they were sold, for a move to another city, the franchise is prime value for the youth and potential they would offer a potential new market. The chance to build a championship, if assets are managed appropriately, is certainly there. (I'm sure potential expansion markets are drooling, and it would seem as though the NHLPA has had enough of the ARI experiment with their outright support of the Utah expression of interest. )

Arizona doesn’t have the roster to be a playoff team. They either need to draft really well in the next couple years or trade futures for young players but there roster now isn’t gonna get them very far.

Has them 5 points outside a wildcard spot which I think is way ahead of schedule in terms of where anyone thought they would be.

I do agree that they likely end up being moved. I think the nail in the coffin for them was really Matthews choosing to stay in Toronto when he signed his deal. There was likely hope around the NHL offices that the home state kid would return and drag the franchise to glory. Would have made for some great marketing, jersey sales, a better case for the new arena, etc.

Hopefully they do end up moving to a location that can offer up some great fans and a packed NHL sized arena; and hopefully they can draft smart and continue to build a good hockey team that will attract potential free agents.

I completely agree MG.

No one expects them to win a cup this year, but if they can squeak in to the playoff picture, or even make it interesting down the stretch, that would be huge for that franchise.
