why do leaf fans think that everyone is going to take their garbage contracts off of them. and why would you want basically want to ice the same team that hasn't won anything.

Cap floor teams sometimes need & want overpaid players on short contracts. Webber & Robertson have trade value, Reeves, Kampf & Jarnkrok could move to cap-floor teams or be included in trades to offset salary differentials.
Wholesale changes don’t happen in a year. Leafs have talent, they need toughness & some chemistry. They took the champs to 7 games
IMO they win if their starting goalie wasn’t targeted & knocked out.

No chance VAN does that trade, or Marner re-signs with the leafs.
As for the shoulda, woulda, coulda about the leafs advancing if they’re goalie didn’t get injured, or the satisfaction of having taken the champs to 7, (some) of you leaf fans have a unique outlook on hockey, and your team’s place in the league.
I’d be pissed if my team blew a rebuild after drafting a generational talent like Matthews, and managed only 2 series wins in 9 years. Most fanbases would have called for heads to roll 5 years ago.

lol @chickenfoot you have no clue what you’re talking about Mathews is not a generational talent he isn’t even the best player on his team that would be Nylander . I guess I’ll give you some attention since you seem lonely.
11 Jun 2025 17:08:38
Lol Nylander is not the beat player on the Leafs. Does he have the potential to be, for sure. But as we seen in the Florida series he was quite content taking shifts off. Matthews picked up his defensive game at least and was battling an injury. Nylander clearly was not seeing as he hopped on a plane and was in a Swedish jersey the day after elimination. If Nylander can find another gear, another level I'd be happy to revist the conversation. But when his effort level was noticeably not there on numerous shifts, he'll in numerous games, because the bounces weren't going his way he can't be the best player on the team. The best players are still a factor in other facets of the game when their strengths aren't available.

“Generational” is a term used by most with the drafting of Matthews, so it’s hardly an opinion unique to me?. (You’re a leaf fan and you don’t get it? )
MG is the most fair-minded leaf fan on this site, so his words on Nylander in relation to Matthews are good enough for me.
As for your “lonely” comment, that’s an oddly weird comment to make. You’ve done the projection thing before, so you definitely paint a picture. We’re all rooting for you to overcome this multi year funk VB. Better, happier, less angry days are ahead of you, so hang in there?.

If the leafs won the cup hypothetically Stolarz or Nylander would have been the Conn Smyth winner and I don’t think that’s debatable (if the other teams top player didn’t win) . Defensive players don’t win the con Smyth. Atleast I don’t remember one that did.
12 Jun 2025 02:44:50
I mean. a goalie is literally the last line of defense.
Also the old saying has yet to be proven wrong. defense wins championships.

VB:
- the leafs won one round. One. You’re getting VERY hypothetical trying to pick a Conn Smythe Trophy winner from the 2024-25 edition of your team.
- I’m not sure how much hockey you watch, but defensive players DO win the Conn Smythe Trophy. (That’s the trophy with the big Maple Leaf on it. )
- Since 2000, 6 defensemen and 5 goalies have won the Conn Smythe Trophy. 11/ 25 isn’t really an anomally.
12 Jun 2025 15:01:20
Usually the guy who wins conn Smyth is the guy who led teams in points.
12 Jun 2025 16:25:52
Sometimes. But as Chickenfoot pointed out 11/ 25 since 2000 have been a dman or a tendy. When Boston was winning you could have very easily made a case for Bergeron to win the Conn Smythe as well.
The point is Nylander isn't the Leafs best player. He has all the tools to be, but he takes too many shifts off and pretty much shuts down if the bounces aren't going his way. The best player on literally every team picks up their play in another area or in another facet of the game to still help the team.
All Leafs fans can hope for is this off-season we get a guy who will drag this team through the trenches when they need to be dragged. Maybe it comes internally and maybe it comes from a trade or FA. But we need someone who doesnt shy away from the guts of the game.
13 Jun 2025 00:31:30
I literally said goalie or leading offensive player. Obviously that goes for Dman aswell if a guy like Makar puts up 25+ points he’s going to win.
13 Jun 2025 12:53:02
2000- Scott Stevens won with 11 points, good for 4th on the team.
2002- Lindstrom won with 16 points, good for 5th on the team.
2007- S. Niedermeyer wins with 11 points, good for 8th on the team.
2014- Williams wins with 25 points, tied for 2nd on the team.
2015- Keith wins with 21 points, tied for 2nd on the team.
2016- Crosby wins with 19 points in 24 games, good for 2nd on the team.
2017- Crosby wins with 27 points, good for 2nd on the team.
2018- Ovie wins with 27 points, good for 2nd on the team.
2020- Hedman wins with 22 points, good for 3rd on the team behind Kuch and point who were well over a point per game.
2023- Marchessault wins with 25 points, good for 2nd on the team.
Any years I left out you were in fact right about it being the top scorer or a goalie. Even though you only mentioned the goalie winning once and that was with your hypothetical of Stolarz winning. After that you don't mention goalies at all. End of the day it all comes back to Nylander isn't the best player on the Leafs and won't be until he gets better in other areas when the bounces aren't going his way.
