Nylander's cap hit is going to make it hard for the Leafs to get a fair deal for players who are more affordable. The Oilers can't afford to lose a d-man so they say no.

Your right the Oil can’t afford to lose a D this season but I don’t think they’d be able to turn this down. They have Jones that could hopefully play more minutes on the left side. They have Broberg playing his second pro season in Sweden so he could be ready next season. Not sure if the Leafs would do it but he does check some boxes. He’s a tough D with leadership.

Nylanders Cap Hit makes him valuable to a lot of teams, just not Edmonton. $6.9M hit but he’s owed is way less. Leafs paid $25M of $45Mcontract in first 2 years.

Teams are cutting payroll coming out of the C.V., lower budget teams would love a cap hit of almost $7M while paying $5M cash for a young player who just had a breakout year. Plus it’s 4 more seasons

islandjet - The oilers are rumoured to be trading 1-2 of their top 4 D from last season. The leafs are needing D. The value is fair. The leafs are trying to shed cap so they can sign Pietro. This clears about a million in cap and gets a pick back as well as Nurse, a solid top 4 D with a massive mean streak. Something the leafs also need. It's a fair deal.

Sampson - The oilers are able to spend to the cap, they have no internal player salary budget.

I know they can. I’m just saying a front loaded contract like his is far more appealing to teams that don’t spend to the cap but need to be cap compliant while saving cash than it is to cap teams.
