Arizona and Toronto are in different positions and it's not just how good each team is, Arizona is about selling tickets first and winning is second.
Matthews is a huge selling feature and they do also get one of the best players in the NHL to start there rebuild.
Toronto is at a point no matter how the playoffs go of changing some things up, one of the core 4 I believe has to go to make them better overall, yes none of these players from Arizona are as good as Matthews but overall The Leafs are better having those 3 over Matthews, Cooley would be able to continue playing with Knies in Toronto also, plus having an extra 1st Rounder in a deep draft only helps for the future.

You may be right Pinball.
The leafs will likely have new management in place next year, and I expect the team and Matthews will be dogged all this summer and next season with “will they sign him/ will they trade him” questions at every turn.
Similar to Dubois’ suspected move to MTL, I’m not sure ARI or MTL offer a generous trade for assets they can sign for no assets as a UFA the following year. Add to that the fact ARI is playing in a 5000 seat arena for 3 years, and they’ll be unlikely to want to take on a big salary like Matthews’ one year sooner than needed.
Whatever happens, it will be a precedent setter in the NHL moving forward.

This is ridiculous players like Mathews aren’t traded ever. That’s about as likely as Edmonton trading McDavid. Side note if the leafs were in the west with this roster they’d be stanly cup favourites ( due to not being worn out in playoffs due to less competition)

There's just no reason for Arizona to do it. If Matthews wants to sign there he will, so it's pointless to pay heavily to get him early. He's not going to sell tickets, people in Arizona don't care about hockey, so it won't make a difference.
It just makes Arizona's pick slightly worse than it would be without Matthews. They might as well keep the assets and get a better pick.

Gretzky was traded. Matthews can be traded.
The leafs wouldn’t be the Stanley Cup favourites in the West. Last time I checked they traded a bunch of future in a last minute attempt for Dubas to save his own job…AND still didn’t get a goalie.

Yes because a goalie with top 3 playoff pedigree in the NHL Murray and a Vezina candidate in Samsonov is the leaf’s biggest need when they have Cal Jarnkrok and Bunting ( 2 3rd line players assuming you haven’t heard of them ) as the leafs top 2 LW. You don’t watch the leafs. You have zero clue what there needs are.
Samsonov has put up better numbers then Binnington, Jarry, Saros, Vanacek, Allen, Swayman, Freddy Andersen, oilers goalies and Gibson this season. No reason to say he isn’t ready for playoff duty.

Yea Gretzky was traded for cash in a different era without cap. That’s a joke comparison. Mathews will leave as a UFA if he leaves at all because like I said players like him are never traded in the salary cap era.

- Samsonov has NEVER been a Vezina candidate, and isn't this year either. Hey, if you like him, great. Just don't peddle that kind of nonsense because it makes you look foolish.

The only joke was your assertion about Matthews not getting traded in the first place.
I suspect he'll pull a "Tkachuk" and simply say he doesn't intend to re-sign, and the team will be forced to salvage what they can via trade. Even Pinball sees that coming. It'll be a surprise to you, and you alone.
